Game 1, 9am. Bondi Shamrocks vs Macquarie University Warriors.
In the preseason game held a month ago, the Shamrocks played an attacking game using the basics of Gaelic Football against the Macquarie University Warriors in their only trial pre-season match. The Warriors were very productive in the second quarter. Now that the stakes are real, it'll be interesting to see how this match pans out. Macquarie University has been on a recruiting spree to field a viable competitive team and the Shamrocks have lost a bit of experience in the playing ranks over the summer. This should equalise out the favouritism that the Shamrocks would have normally been accorded with. This will be the coaching debut for Geoff Odgers in charge of the Shamrocks (previously coached the Stingrays in 2008) and Belinda Harrison in charge of the Warriors in their first competitive league match.
Head to Head Record: Yet to play in a league match.
Game 2, 11am Southern Power vs UNSW Stingrays
This should be a lineball game for both clubs eager to get a win to start off the season. The Stingrays and the Southern Power will both be fielding a lot of rookies keen to play a game of competitive football. It may come to the coaching battle of wits between Gary Slowgrove (Power) vs Ben Porter (Stingrays). Both coaches are in their second year of coaching women's football. Gary used to coach the former St George Dragons team and Ben returns as the Stingrays coach again for the second year.
Head to Head Record: Yet to play against each other
Game 3, 1pm Sydney University Bombers vs Wollongong Saints
An arduous task faces the newest team in the league for Wollongong playing against the team that has the dilemma of whom to leave out. Sydney University has gone on a recruiting spree over the summer picking up some players who are new and some whom have played for other clubs including three state players from the Shamrocks. Wollongong is mainly composed of young women whom have yet to play a game. Thus the experience factor of Sydney University might well be the deciding factor between the two sides. This will be the coaching debut of Krissie Steen (Bombers) vs Stan (Wollongong).
Head to Head Record: Yet to play against each other
Game 4, 3pm Western Wolves vs Newtown Breakaways
They say Collingwood vs Carlton is the league's bitterest rivals or is it Collingwood vs Essendon. For SWAFL, it has been Newtown versus Wests. Rarely has it been a blowout between the two clubs with often two or three goals the difference between the two teams. Newtown has suffered a wave of retirements including their coach and thus have a clean slate to work with. In contrast Wests have a settled side and are keen to reverse the 2009 Grand Final Result. Can Newtown's new coach Darren Lewtas with new resources triumph over the NSW State Coach Jason King and his settled side? It'll be an exciting match to wrap up the new start to the 2010 SWAFL Premiership Season.
Head to Head: Played 26 - Newtown 17, Wests 8. Drawn 1.
