On a cold Saturday morning, Sydney University hosted the St George Dragons who were looking forward to this match as a vital piece of putting their finals campaign together. For Sydney University the opportunity to play on the hallowed grounds of Oval No. 1 was an experience not to be missed and continue to stretch the gap with 5th placed Bondi Shamrocks. St George hit out of the blocks early to score some goals playing up the center of the relatively short ground whilst Sydney University used the wings. At half-time St George were 6.4.40 to 5.1.31. St George continued on with the job in the 2nd half to run out winners 9.6.60 to 7.4.46.
Further colour by an additional spectator was that in the second half Sydney University Amelia Dever was involved in a major collision with Dragons Erin Burns that had fears of a fracture. Amelia or "Millsy" was then placed in the grandstand whilst an ambulance raced to the ground, which meant that one of the Bomber's Co-coaches were out of action. Those who impressed the spectator was (Dragons) Kate Winterbottom and Sandra Hale who was tight on Bombers Gianna Abbonizio. (Bombers) Amelia Dever. This is the first time St George had defeated Sydney University - so congratulations Dragons!
In the second game Premiers - the Western Wolves hosted the Bondi Shamrocks at Mahoney Park. After the first quarter Marie Keating had scored 3 straight goals for the Shamrocks to lead the Wolves 3.0.18 to 2.3.15. Just after the commencement of the second quarter, the umpires halted the game for a count of the players and it was found that the Shamrocks had 19 players.
Under AFL Rules - a team that has more than the alloted players has their score wiped out and a 50m penalty shall be applied. So the Wolves took advantage of the Shamrocks confusion to score 21 points in the quarter to lead at half time 5.6.36 to the readjusted score of 0.0.0.
In the 3rd quarter Wolves outscored the Shamrocks to lead 8.7.55 to 2.1.13 including a fantastic goal by Dubbo 15 year old sensation Lauren Hazell which was 30m on the run from the right pocket. In the 4th quarter the Shamrocks found their momentum and were completely dominant over a tiring Wolves to keep them scoreless whilst scoring 4.2.26 but ran out of time to have the Wolves winning by 16 points - 8.7.55 to 6.3.39.
Those who impressed were (Wolves) Georgia Woodyard, Lauren Hazell (Shamrocks) Kate Woodlands, Una McKay and Maeve O'Sullivan. The Wolves played solidly and now move to 2nd on the ladder and equal 1st on points with Newtown who play next weekend.
