Match Review:
On a very cold and blustry day at Mahoney, the SWAFL squad which had a lot of members in the NSW TPP Squad took on the NSW GAA squad. The team was unable to take advantage of the strong wind in the first quarter blowing towards the brick wall end and the GAA team with their quick play the balls had the girls in blue on the backfoot. Although the ladies tried hard especially in the third quarter when they had some prime opportunities in front of goal, it was a victorious GAA ladies who were able to retain the Irish Australian Cup 8.19.16.119 to 0.1.5.8. Many thanks to all the participants, off-field support staff and officials. In the men's game, the GAA Men's were able to win for the first time 53 - 28 to win the double.
Match Preview
We call it Compromise, but when Australia
play against Ireland, as they will next month, it is called
International Rules. Well October is our time to sample a piece of
this newer sport and on our home soil.
For
those new to this game, it is a blend of the AFL and GAA rules, played
on a rectangle pitch, with three scoring options and with a round
ball. It is a lot faster game than AFL is played generally, and the
day itself is full of atmosphere as the mens match is played straight
after, and generally a good crowd comes along.
There
is still tackling, but no sheparding. Marks are paid, and you can score
6 points for an under ('soccer goal), 3 for an over, and one for a
behind. There will be a field umpire from GAA and from AFL, plus one
boundary umpire from each side, and two goal umps to keep it all as even
and above board as is possible. If in the event of a draw there
will be a result ...... no replays, we will play for a win.
A squad of 24 players will be selected to represent the NSW and Sydney
Womens AFL in this one off match against the NSW Gaelic Athletic
Association for the Irish Australian Cup on the 16th October, 1pm, at
Mahoney Park, Marrickville.
The
dates and fields for training have been confirmed and will start
next week on the 5th October, Tuesdays and Fridays, 6.30pm-8.30pm at
Mahoney Park, Marrickville. The sessions are open to all eligible
players keen to trial, and it is expected that the players from the
Talented Player Program be the bulk of the side.
After some heavy losses in the previous
two times these sides have contested for the Irish Australian Cup the
SWAFL side is making some bigger plans in preparing for this match this
year. Some of that will be joining in with the men at training and
building on the speed side of the game, as well as more developed skill
sessions to get used to playing with the round ball.
So
supporters pack your rugs and get along to cheer our girls on, or
players come along and trial for this exciting opportunity to test your
skills with the round ball.
The
party will continue, long into the night, Irish style at Durty Nellys
in Paddington. Always a fun and interesting evening follows.
