As always all opinions are of the editors and not of the league.
In game 1 of the 2011 season held at Mahoney, the Bondi Shamrocks took on the UNSW-Easts Stingrays. During the offseason some players such as Jo Willessee returned after a year off footy while the Stingrays recruited many new players. The results were promising as after a tentative start in the first quarter, the Stingrays slammed home 4 goals in the second quarter. From there the Stingrays were never headed although the Shamrocks salvaged some pride in the final quarter to get on the scoreboard.
In game 2 also held at Mahoney, the new look Macquarie University Warriors took on the new start team of the Auburn Tigers. It was to be a rude awakening for the Tigers, as the Warriors believed in themselves to win their first ever game in two years by winning by eight points. I am sure the club song got a work out!!!! I understand the inaugural victory of the Women's team made the local newspapers - well done!
In game 3 held in Wollongong, Southern Power held onto the F6 Challenge Cup by demolishing the Wollongong Saints by 84 points which is the highest score recorded by Southern Power / St George. Rebekah Lucas doing most of the damage with 4 goals.
In game 4 held at Mahoney, it was the Riverina rematch between the Western Wolves and Sydney University. Sydney University triumphed by 52 points with Amelia Kavanagh (Millsy) kicking 5 goals.
In game 5 held at Mahoney, in the grand final rematch a committed Balmain Dockers was determined to reverse the grand final result over premiers Newtown. The Dockers started from the get-go with three goals in the first quarter and continued from there. The end score was 69-16 but Newtown was found to have an unregistered player and thus lost all their 16 points so the end score was 69-0.
Round 2 Preview. Well I predicted 3 out of 5 last week, so this week I tip Newtown, Balmain, Southern Power, Stingrays and Wollongong.
Match of the round: Balmain Dockers vs Sydney University at Mahoney 10am.
Good luck to all teams over the weekend.
