Friday Night sees Sydney University hosting Wests at Mahoney Park at 7:30pm (Amended time). Both teams are in pretty good form with the Baby Bombers have been one of the great improvers in 2009 coming off a win over the Balmain Dockers whilst Wests are keen to avenge their loss against Newtown. Rookie ruck Simone Walsh for the Sydney University Bombers has been outstanding so far backed up by the strong backline led by Krysten Winkley and centre Emma Yuen. Wests have been strong led by their center / rover combination. With both teams utilising a play-on style, we expect the ball to be in constant motion.
The head to head record sees Wests 20 wins, Sydney University 8 wins
Saturday sees Balmain Dockers at their waterfront home of Drummoyne Oval hosting the UNSW-Easts Stingrays. The Dockers will be keen to improve their Drummoyne Oval record after losing a close game to the Shamrocks a couple of weeks ago whilst the Stingrays will be keen to trip up the Dockers. With the Stingrays more than competitive last week with the benefit of having a least a bench for the first teime this year, that should be a message to their team-mates that great things happen when you can have 18 on the field. Let's hope their intensity and desire for the ball hasn't dropped off. The Dockers after visiting unfamilar territory of having two close losses will be keen to get back in the winners circle and should be fired up for this match.
The head to head record sees Balmain 17 wins, UNSW-Easts 4 wins
The two other games will be held at Pioneer Oval, Malabar, AFL's newest ground facility and probably the newest one in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney for a very long time, thanks to the NSW/ACT Commission and long-term tenant the Maroubra Saints. We look forward to more permanent facilities being built to a standard such as Mahoney and no doubt more games will be allocated there in 2010.
The first game at 12pm sees Mac Uni take on the Shamrocks in the development game. With Mac Uni building on their core group, we can only wish them all the success in building numbers and a viable team for the 2010 competition.
The second game at 2pm sees Newtown taking on St. George. St. George after a 44 point win over Easts and having the weekend off look forward to taking on the league powerhouse Newtown Breakaways. The Breakaways have been miserly in defence letting in an average of 43 points per game, whilst their attack averages 76 points. One of their highlights has be the combination of Roxy McGee, Nicole Roache and Natasha Devlin. In contrast St George potentially look potent with the switch of Dragon's captain Christine Coles to the centre/rover has given her more exposure to the ball and bringing down Ashlee McClure from full-forward to centre half-forward which led to 3 goals against Easts. Last year St George narrowly lost to the Breakaways in their closest ever result between the two sides by 8 points.
The head to head record sees Newtown at 5 wins, St George yet to win.
