Women power into AFL
BY MICHAEL CARAYANNIS - 19 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
SOUTHERN Power AFL Club are entering their first team in the Sydney Women's Australian Rules competition.
The side starts preseason training today at Gwawley Oval, Taren Point, in preparation for the season kick-off in April.
Player and team manager Janine McGlynn said it was an exciting time for the club.
"Most
of us were part of the St George Dragons AFL side but we thought we'd
seek out a different club and see where we could go,'' said McGlynn, a
full forward.
"We had a few meetings with the Power and their ideas were a lot like ours.
"They are really supportive, so it's been working really well.''
The Power have 20 players at the moment but will need at least five more before the season starts.
The side has a mixture of experience, including NSW player Kate Winterbottom.
"We're
competitive and we want to win but it's important to have a team
together that are wanting to play for each other,'' said McGlynn, who
is in her third year of AFL.
"Obviously, we want to make the
finals and win a competition. In the first year it might not be
possible but you always want to get there.''
The competition is
likely to see three new teams: the Power, University of Wollongong
Bulldogs and University of Technology, Sydney.
The women's league started in 2000.
"The club have never had a women's team before so it's something they are looking forward to,'' McGlynn said.
"They are a club run by their players so they are all in for us having a go.''
Newtown Breakaways beat defending champions Western Wolves in last year's grand final.
Players as young as 16 can play in the senior competition.
"We've got some people that have been playing for six or seven years and a few that have just started,'' McGlynn said.
"Most have played other sports and as long as they get in and handle the ball they are fine.''
Gary Slowgrove will coach the side.
