The Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Cr Robert Furolo MP, said he was looking forward to work commencing on the $400,000 redevelopment of Picken Oval in Croydon Park. The redevelopment was announced today by President of the Western Suburbs Australian Football Club Andrew Taylor, who will be overseeing the Project. "Council is proud to contribute $130,000 towards the redevelopment, which will transform the Oval into a state-of-the-art playing field for our local AFL players," Mayor Robert Furolo said.
"The oval is leased predominantly by the Western Suburbs Australian Football Club, and not long ago we also worked together to bring a new amenities building to the oval. "This redevelopment will further enhance the Oval and will include drainage works, irrigation and resurfacing to bring it to a professional standard. "Providing quality sporting and recreational areas for our residents is a high priority for Council and this contribution to the Picken Oval redevelopment will help promote sport to our community and encourage participation. "The Western Suburbs Australian Football Club is to be commended for their work in planning this major redevelopment and continuously encouraging our community to live an active lifestyle and promoting mateship and teamwork through sport. "This redevelopment will greatly benefit not only our local residents, but also encourage visitors from other areas to enjoy our facilities.
"I look forward to seeing Picken Oval reach its full potential. It might be the home of Australia's next big AFL legend," Mayor Furolo said. Sydney Water has also contributed $20,000 to the Project as part of their Every Drop Counts Program for a Rainwater Tank for use on the grounds. $62,000 has also been allocated by the State Government as part of the Community Infrastructure Program and AFL NSW/ACT is contributing $120,000.
The redevelopment will assist the Wolves as part of the broader Sydney Magpies club, in terms of sponsorships and in future allocation of SWAFL games. At the launch also was State MP for Canterbury, Linda Burney (Minister for State Plan, Minister for Community Services) and Western Wolves Captain Christine MacDonald and Wolves player Rachel Mercer.
