This week saw all the teams return to Mahoney Park to battle it out for Round 4.
The first match saw Newtown take on Easts. Both teams were short players on the day so there was plenty of room on the ground to run into which resulted in a nice, open, free flowing game. Newtown played strongly in the first half to take an unbeatable lead, and despite Easts penetrating their 50 on numerous occassions in the last quarter and really challenging the Newtown defense, they could not manage to find the big sticks.
In match two, Balmain overwhelmed a brave, understrength St George club. Balmain played to their strengths of quick play the balls, moving the ball through their wings and unselfish play to center the ball to forwards. St George's physicality and courage were not to be denied but were well beaten by a quality Balmain side.
In the last match of the day, Wests triumped over Sydney University. This match had been eagerly anticipated amongst participants as there had been a transfer of some players and coach from Sydney University to Western Suburbs in the offseason. The teams traded goal for goal until the third quarter where Wests kicked ahead to lead by three goals at the last break. Sydney University replied with a surge but ran out of time to be denied in a close contest. The intensity, desire and commitment amongst both sides was indeed worthy of a grand final.
