Youth Girls Day
With rain of biblical proportions hitting Sydney in the last two days (26.2mm) it was a soggy day indeed to be playing the first Youth Girls Gala Day in Sydney. While some wouldn’t be blamed not to come out of the house, there were about 22 brave girls who were keen to play and some had came all the way from Dubbo and Nelson Bay.
With plans changed from a round robin format to one long single match of two halves, the girls were split into two teams. One team was the red bibs and the other was Team Charlie. The girls played with great vigour and enthusiasm led by a couple of the SWAFL ladies especially from Sydney University including Bry Cole, Jemma Still, Melanie Baird, Joanne Rosner and Danielle McCarthy. Thanks to the St George ladies including Christine Coles, Vanessa Smith in goal umpiring and Kristy Sharpe for playing.
Despite the weather, the skills displayed by our future players of tomorrow were awesome and it is a credit to their junior clubs to how they have developed them. We look forward to many more girls attending in the future and develop a pathway from junior football to senior football.
Afterwards the players and parents enjoyed a free sausage sizzle and asked many questions to the SWAFL committee and the Club Coaches (Thanks Geoff, Jason and Lance) about women’s football. SWAFL fully intends to expand the programme in Sydney in 2009 with more gala days. No doubt better weather conditions lay ahead (fingers crossed!).
