The wind was
up and from the South East for the Hobie Cat 16 racing, Sunday June 8
th. The course was set in a triangle
from the start off the Yacht Club to the Red channel marker off Blunt Point to
the Green marker off Origin Energy to the down wind mark off Sadie’s by The Sea
and back to the start.
RACE 1:
Race 1 saw all boats away to a
good start lead by Asco Toyota, PCS-TV and McConnell Dowell. A quick beat upwind and all the
boats rounded the windward mark in the same order and a short reach across to
the Origin mark. Around the mark and Asco Toyota
set sail for the downwind mark with PCS-TV in hot pursuit and McConnell Dowell
chasing hard. PCS-TV made the Sadies mark a nose
in front of Asco Toyota with McConnell Dowell closing the gap. Heading for the finish Asco Toyota
was able to sail closer to the wind and beat PCS-TV on the final tack to regain
the lead and take First place ahead of PCS-TV with McConnell Dowell a close
third.
RACE 2:
Asco Toyota hit the start line
seconds after the whistle and was off to a great start chased by McConnell Dowell with PCS-TV
a slow starter after having an equipment problem. The upwind mark and Origin mark
were rounded without any changes and the boats set off for the Sadies. McConnell Dowell made good
downwind gains on Asco Toyota but never came close enough to challenge for the
lead. Asco Toyota took the finish ahead
of McConnell Dowell by 50 seconds with PCS-TV in last place.
RACE 3:
PCS-TV charged across the start
line with Asco Toyota hard on his rudder, and the race was on to the windward
mark. Asco Toyota kept to the starboard
tack and headed further across the harbor while PCS-TV and Mc Connell Dowell
opted for an earlier and shorter tack. Asco Toyota’s gamble paid off and
they rounded the mark well ahead of the other boats and took the Origin energy
mark in style. A easy run downwind saw Asco
Toyota around the Sadies mark and across the finish with PCS-TV and McConnell
Dowell hammering it out for second and third places.
RACE 4:
The crew of Asco Toyota changed
roles for the last race with Sebastian Rodrigues taking on the role of skipper. Asco Toyota was first across the
line with McConnell Dowell and PCS-TV several boat lengths behind. Tacking upwind was done without
any change to the order and the short reach to the Origin mark taken easily by
all boats. McConnell Dowell and PCS-TV put up
a good battle for second and third on the downwind run but were no challenge to
Asco Toyota who was well ahead and took line honors with ease. Mc Connell Dowell survived the
challenge from PCS-TV to take second place. Congratulations to Sebastian on
his first time as skipper.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable
day’s racing and all look forward to race 7 in the series, slated for June 22nd. At the end of the day’s racing the
points are: PCS-TV 21, Asco Toyota 34, McConnell Dowell, 57 and PPYC 1, 68.
