July 24 Games

Reigning three-peat champion San Beda and multi-titled Letran renew their age-old rivalry as the two collide today in a duel between the
league’s most titled teams in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. The Lions are expected to bank on the momentum of a three-game streak wherein they blew the opposition with a whopping average winning margin of 27 points including their recent 98-65 rout of the Perpetual Help Altas last week. The winning binge came after the Lions, who are now at solo third with a 4-1 (win-loss) slate behind only the 5-0 Jose Rizal and San Sebastian, lost to the unbeaten Stags in a 77-83 heartbreaker last July 1. San Beda coach Frankie Lim said they hope to rely on their recent momentum against their fiercest rival. “We have been having lopsided victories and its time to prove that we can beat big teams like Letran,” said Lim. Beating the Knights though is far from easy as the Muralla-based dribblers are likewise riding the crest of a three-game streak to climb their way out of a 0-2 hole and zoom to No. 4 with a 3-2 card they highlighted with an 86-69 thrashing of the St. Benilde Blazers. And Lim knows its going to be a war of attrition. “It’s not going to be easy. We have to handle the pressure defense very well and limit their production of their scorers,” said Lim. Lim was referring to the high-scoring pair of RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra, the Smart Gilas Pilipinas veterans who have been carrying most of the scoring load for Letran in their recent wins. “It’s going to be a battle that’s for sure,” said Letran mentor Louie Alas, who steered the school to three of its league best 16 championships in 1998,  003 and 2005. Meanwhile, St. Benilde tries to resuscitate its Final Four bid as it goes up against Perpetual Help at 4 p.m. The Blazers dropped their three matches in row after roaring to a 2-0 start while the Altas have fared worse as they lost four of their first five outings to fall in a four-way logjam at the bottom with Mapua and guest teams Angeles U Foundation and Emilio Aguinaldo
