Staglets Downs Light Bombers

San Sebastian College-Recoletos, the new power in NCAA junior's basketball, is one win away from achieving a rare 'four-peat'.

The defending champion Staglets downed the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers in overtime, 97-88, to clinch an outright championship berth at the end of the junior's elimination of the 84th NCAA Season yesterday at the Astrodome in Pasay City.

Veterans Arvie Bringas, Raffy Gusi, Almond Vosotros and Jamil Ortuoste combined forces in the extra five-minute period to help San Sebastian complete a 12-game sweep.

"Sarap ng feeling ng maka-sweep, we always think one game at a time.  Last year, kaya naming mag-sweep pero hindi nangyari, kaya pinagtrabahuhan namin ito nang husto this season," said coach Raymond Valenzona, who has been handling the Staglets since 2002.

San Sebastian became the first team to sweep the double-round elimination. Letran did it in 2000.

The Staglets were up, 68-54, at the end of the third canto, when the Light Bombers rebounded and sent the game into OT  when Louie Vigil uncorked a trey for a 74-74, in the last 1.9 seconds of regulation.

Jose Rizal last tied the count at 79-79 in overtime after a Ric Madlangbayan basket in the 3:20 mark of extension, but they simply folded up in the end.

Bringas registered 29 points and eight rebounds while Vosotros added 26 points, 10 boards, eight assists and four steals for San Sebastian.

With a 'twice-to-beat' incentive, the Staglets need to win only once to retain the title.

Louie Vigil pumped in 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Light Bombers, who got 21 points from second year sensation Keith Agovida.

The 18-year-old Agovida sizzled for 82 points, a new league record, in Jose Rizal's 127-49 walloping of Mapua last Friday.

Already in the step-ladder semifinals are Letran (9-3) and JRU (7-7). Playing at presstime were CSB-La Salle Green Hills (6-5) and San Beda (5-6). A win by the Junior Blazers would gime them the last semis seat, but a victory by the Red Cubs would force a playoff.
