Round 6 – 2011
Last week saw the Finley Cats record their first victory for the season, while Moama and Deni Rams had to work hard and come from behind to score close victories.
This week we have 3 teams with the bye, but also some very interesting games being played. Rumbalara v Finley should give MFL followers an indication of exactly where these 2 teams stand in 2011. While the Tongala v Mulwala clash is also a significant game. The Toc v United game also shapes as a close one, while Cobram and Moama should have comfortable victories.
Rumbalara v Finley
Rumbalara host Finley in what shapes as a real test for the Cats. Rumba has been very impressive in the early part of the season and will look to continue that form today. The have a powerful midfield led by Jarrod Atkinson, Djaren Whyman, Brayden Williams, Ben Cox and Josh Wanganeen. While up forward there are plenty of options in Eric Edwards, Leroy Boland, Levi Power and Corey Wanganeen. The skills and pace of Rumba will make things difficult for the Cats. Finley recorded their first victory of the season with a big win over Tocumwal and will be keen to continue their winning streak. Recruits Tom Seccull, Nick and Will Robertson and Ned Morrison were in good touch last week, along with Chris Libertino who booted 4 goals. If Finley are to cause the upset then they need big games from Matt Jackson, Joel Richardson, Paul Massingham and Ali Brooks, along with their recruits. On Rumba’s home ground they should be too strong at the end of the day.
Tocumwal v Echuca United
Echuca United make the trek to Tocumwal looking to get their first win of the season on the board. This should be a very close and entertaining battle as both teams possess some quality midfielders. The Bloods Sean Logie and John Shiels come up against Scott Beattie, Duane Hueston and Rowan Priest, in what shapes as the real key to this game. The Eagles should hold the aces in the ruck clash through veteran Damian Dalziel. While the Bloods appear on paper appear to have the more potent forward line with Balraj Singh, Nathan Tresize and Luke Chapman capable of kicking a match winning score. Nathan Rowbottom should have a good battle with Singh, while Ryan Prendergast and Craig Frost will be key players in the Eagles quest for victory. This is a real toss of the coin game, but on their home deck The Bloods may just sneak home.
Tongala v Mulwala
Mulwala make the long journey to Tongala fresh from the bye and chasing the 4 points on offer in this important clash. While Tonny had to battle hard against bottom team Numurkah. Both teams possess some talented midfielders which could hold the key to this game. Luke Guerra, Brett Scarcella, Matt Deledio, Luke Souter will come up against Nick O’Bryan and Sean Robinson. The Lions forwards could pose a danger for Tonny and Dylan Robinson and Josh Hammond will need to be closely watched. Tonny key defenders Adam Lovison and Andrew Reid will need to be on their game. Tongala have a reunion on this Saturday and that may be just the spur to get them over the line in a close one.
Moama v Nathalia
Moama welcome Nathalia with the view of continuing their recent good form. They had to come from behind in a hard fought victory over Barooga last week, and are again building momentum as the season progresses. The depth and versatility of their playing list is extremely good and the Purples will again be in for a hard day. James Scambler, Luke Eldridge, James and Tom Gilligan and Luke Dunham have been very solid contributors again for Moama this season, along with Joe Cosgriff and Brandt Gladman. The small Moama ground may suit the Purples and the marking strength of Brett Vallender, Jason Limbrick, Brodie Ross and Lucas Denton. If Ross Garner, Troy Snelson, Craig Whyte and Luke McPhillamy can lead the way for the younger Purples then they may push the Mowers. However, at home Moama should be too good and run out victors.
Cobram v Numurkah
Cobram take on Numurkah looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season. They should be too powerful for the young Blues with John Lucas, Ryan Bongetti, Kane Boyer, Nick Tassell, Beau Wilson, James Marks and Charlie Edmonston providing plenty of goal scoring options for their forwards, in Rob Osborne, Simon Rudd and Shaun Wilson. Numurkah will be in for a tough day but youngsters, Tom Scott, Paul McNamara, Beau McKeown and Dan Buzza continue to battle hard. At the end of the day they will be simply overrun by the bigger and more experienced Tigers.
Byes – Barooga, Deniliquin, Congupna.
Selections – Rumbalara, Moama, Cobram, Tocumwal, Tongala.
