Wedderburn v Donald
Wedderburn and Donald staged a great contest in the opening half of their game with neither side being able to break away with both sides defences working overtime. Benaim for Wedderburn was getting plenty of the Sherrin and he turned back many forward moves from Donald and he was getting great support from Ben DeAraugo for Donald Haddow was their key player and after finding his feet Luke Fisher showed his quality as he controlled the ball through the midfield. At the halfway mark both sides were locked together on four goals four points apiece in a half of football that was very entertaining to watch with both sides showing patches of exciting football and both sides would have went to half time reasonably satisfied with their efforts.
After the break Donald came out the better side as they started to gain control with Fisher again being right in the action and leading from the front. Strange was winning at the centre bounces but the Redbacks could not capitalise on his good work. In this term the Royal Blues outscored the Redbacks five goals to two and set up a twenty point lead at the final change.
Donald continued their good form of the first three quarters and got out to a match winning lead by midterm with the Redbacks finding it hard to convert at the other end. Donald extended their lead out to just under fifty points as the game closed in on full time and it took until after the final siren for Wedderburn to record their only goal for the final quarter. Seamus Young was the leading goal scorer for Donald with four goals; Jackson Hogan kicked three goals in a good solid performance. Luke Rosa kicked three goals for Wedderburn and Brett Strange was in their best players. The final margin for Donald was forty points and their win now elevates them into the top two for the first time for a long time and if their form continues to improve they will worry a lot of sides between now and finals time.
Final score Donald 13-10= 88 def Wedderburn 7-6= 48
Boort v Wycheproof-Narraport
Wycheproof-Narraport on the back of their first win last week continued on with that winning form when they posted eight first quarter goals against Boort who could manage just the one goal in the opening term. Mead-Harding and Ricky Allan were on target in the first quarter both kicking two goals to set up a good lead for the Demons at quarter time.
In the second quarter the young Boort side was able to restrict the Demons scoring as they held the visitors to just three goals but the Magpies were unable to add any major score in the term and at half time were again looking down the barrel of a large defeat.
In the third quarter Boort played their best football and were again able hold the Demons but they were also able to add to their score with two goals to outscore the Demons in this term and there were some positive signs there for the Magpie faithful with their young chargers turning on an improving brand of football.
In the final quarter the Demons got their game back on track and were able to run out the game better than the Magpies to run out convincing winners by around the 90-point margin. Mead-Harding finished the day with six goals and Ricky Allan four for the Demons while for Boort Jordan Bleicher kicked two of the Magpies four goals.
Final scores Wycheproof-Narraport 16-20=116 def Boort 4-3=27
Birchip-Watchem v Charlton
Birchip-Watchem were out to avenge their narrow defeat of last week and were straight into the action with Gilmour posting the first two goals of the game and they were able to keep the Navy Blues from scoring until late in the term when McGrath kicked truly to put them on the board. The Bulls led by just eleven points at the first break and were looking the better of the two teams.
Scoring was hard to come by for either side in the second quarter with only the one goal being scored that being a goal to Birchip-Watchem’s Castellano. In this term Charlton’s Kyriakides was stretchered off the ground after taking a heavy knock. At half time the Bulls lead was 15-points and Charlton were finding it very difficult to make any impression on the scoreboard even in this low scoring game.
Birchip-Watchem had the chance to wrap this game up in the third quarter when they were off target posting 2-5 with Charlton only able to manage the two goals but it was enough to keep them within reach of the bulls with a quarter to be played.
Charlton entered the final term 14-points in arrears of the Birchip-Watchem Bulls and if the previous three quarters were any indication of how the game would pan out for them there was probably a little concern to them getting the points over the Bulls.
After a short while into the final term Charlton through Sullivan posted their first goal which put them back a bit closer to the Bulls. McGrath and Mulquiny added two more goals for Charlton to give them a slender lead which was unfamiliar territory for them as they had trailed all day. As the clock headed towards full time the Bulls regained the lead when Hinkley brought up his first goal of the day in the dying minutes of the game but it was the goal of Judd who brought the Charlton crowd alive as the Navy Blues hit the lead just prior to the siren sound to give Charlton an unexpected win gauged on their form in the opening three quarters. Judd, Aaron Walklate and McLean were the better players for Charlton and Hinkley, Greaney and Ratcliffe were the Bulls best.
