In the Under 16s, there were two games of interest, the battle for outright leadership between Glengarry and Churchill, and teams looking for their first win, Pax Hill and Combined Saints.
The top of the table clash turned out to be a bit of a fizzer, as Glengarry played good footy for four quarters to consistently add to the scoreboard, while restricting Churchills opportunities to score. Churchill were missing quite a few players, so they will be hoping to reverse the 75 point defeat later in the season when they meet again.
Pax Hill and Combined Saints contest was always going to be close game, but who would prevail? Pax Hill jumped to an early lead in the first quarter, with both teams being inaccurate in front of goal, Pax leading 4-6-30 to 1-4-10. In the second, Combined made some inroads, obvioulsy having the scoring end, as they managed to add three goals, to Paxs one, which narrowed the gap to only 8 points at the long break. The third quarter was pivotal for Combined, as they outscored Pax Hill 24 to 13, and lead by 3 points at the last change. The last quarter Combined continued to dominate on the scoreboard, adding a further 4 goals 5 behinds, to Paxs solitary goal, and run out winners by 26 points.
The game of the round for the Under 14s was between the undefeated West End, and fourth placed City Juniors. West End got the jump on City in the first quarter, as they kept them scoreless, and added 2 goals 5 behinds and lead by that margin at quarter time. In the second quarter, West End had more scoring shots with 1 goal 3 behinds, but City kicked straight for 2 goals, with the margin being a 14 point lead to West End at half time. In the third quarter, scoring opportunities were hard to come by, with Citys defence standing up and restricting West End to just 2 points, while they added 2 golas 2 behinds, and trail by only 2 points at the last change. In the final quarter, it was City Juniors kicking goals while they kept West End goaless again, to run out winners by 11 points in a hard fought game of junior footy.
Four out of the five games were good contests in this round. Glengarry maintained their unbeaten run at the hands of Churchill. Leading by 39 points at the last change, Churchill kicked 4 goals to 1 to demonstrate their fighting spirit of never give in to go down by a respectable 19 points. TEDAS and Southside played a very dogged game of the defences, as neither team was able to gain a real advantage, with TEDAS leading 1-2-8 to no score at half time. TEDAS kicked 2 goals to nil in the third quarter, but Southside kept persisting and outscorded TEDAS in the last quarter, to go down by a 13 points in a hard fought contest.
In the Under 10s, Police Boys had a come from behind win over Cumberland Park thanks to their accurate kicking by 16 points. After trailing by 5 points at three quarter time, Police Boys kicked 4 goals 3 behinds to Cumberlands solitary goal and get their second win of the year by 16 points. In other matches, TEDAS had 11 scoring shots to Southsides 3, and scraped home by 8 points in another close game to maintain its unbeaten run on top with West End. Combined Saints scored their second win of the year over the higher placed Pax Hill. Neither team had their goal kicking boots on, as Combined got up 5-10-40 to 1-9-15.
Fingers crossed, that the weather man provides us with nice clear skies and no wind this weekend for us to watch the junior footy. Southside and Pax Hill get things on the way this Friday night, with games commencing at 5.10pm, and then on Saturday, Churchill hosts West End, with all the other games played at the West End Complex.
