Round 9 presented us with a fantastic day for footy on Saturday, although it was a bit wet first thing thanks to the dew, but as the day went on, it only got better. This enabled the Under 14s and 16s to have some close contests and allow the teams to demonstrate their skills and teamwork to all those there watching.
In the Under 16s, the match of the round was between City Juniors (7th) and Pax Hill (8th). This was the first time they had met this season, with City Juniors having beaten Southside in Round 1 their only win, and Pax yet to have a win, this was always going to be a good match up. The first quarter was a goal feast, as both sides were able to score goals at will it seemed, with City kicking straight for the term with 5 goals, whereas Pax Hill had more scoring shots and held a 4 point lead at quarter time, kicking 5 goals 4 behinds. The match tightened up in the second quarter, with only 3 goals being scored in the quarter, all by Pax Hill to take a 22 point lead into half time, and looking the goods for their first win. The third quarter, was one of best quarters played by Pax Hill, if not their best for the year, as they plied on 5 goals 7 to 1 point and have a match winning lead at three quarter time by 58 points. In the last, they took their foot off the pedal, and to Citys credit, they never stopped trying outscoring Pax Hill in the last quarter, but not enough, and Pax Hill were able to run out winners for their first win of the year by 51 points.
Pax Hill (3rd) was also involved in the match of the round in the Under 14s, as they took on top team TEDAS. Pax Hill had more of the play in the first quarter and this was reflected on the scoreboard with 8 scoring shots to 3, and hold a 15 point lead at the first change. TEDAS upped the ante in the second, but were in accurate in front of goal kicking 6 behinds and only 2 goals, while Pax Hill added 2 straight goals, manitaining a 9 point lead at the long break. The third quarter was a high scoring affair, as both teams created scoring opportunities with 6 a piece, but Pax Hill was more accurate, kicking 5 goals 1 to 3 goals 3, and hold a handy 10 point lead going into the final term. TEDAS were unable to make inroads on the scoreboard in the last, whilst Pax Hill added a further 4 goals to 1 and run out winners 15-6-96 to 8-12-60. In other matches, Churchill and Police Boys had a shoot out, kicking 33 goals between them in a high scoring affair, with Police Boys getting the win, thanks to a handy 9 goal effort from Jake Vucenovic. City Juniors stayed on the winning list and sitting in 4th place on the ladder with a close fought inaccurate contest with Combined Saints, getting up 6-14-50 to 3-8-26.
The Under 12 game of the round was the upset win by Police Boys 9th, against the fourth placed Churchill. The opening quarter was very even, as both teams only managed to kick a solitary goal. Police Boys made the most of the chances in the second, as they added 2 goals 3 to Churchills 1 point and hold a 15 point lead at half time. In the third quarter, Police Boys were able to extend their lead by two points, as both teams added only 2 goals each for the quarter, with Police Boys leading 5-6-36 to 3-1-19. In the final term, Churchill lifted and tried valiantly to peg back the lead, but inaccuracy in the last term put paid to any comeback, kicking 1 goal 4 to 1 goal, allowing Police Boys to notch their second win of the season by 13 points. In other matches, a competitive effort from Cumberland Park gave West End a run for their money, but were unable to gain victory, while Combined Saints continued their unbeaten run with a win over City Juniors.
The close one in the Under 10s was the match between TEDAS second, against Pax Hill fifth. In a tight opening quarter, the only score was courtesy of a Pax Hill goal. TEDAS came out firing in the second, as they dominated the scoring during this quarter, kicking 4 goals 3 to 2 points, and hold a handy 20 point lead at half time. The third term saw pax Hill create more opportunities whilst restricting TEDAS, but were unable to capitalise enough, only reducing the margin by 2 points. TEDAS stepped up again in the last term, as they added 3 goals to 1, allowing them to conslidate their position as second on the ladder with a 8-6-54 to 3-3-21 win over Pax Hill. Other winners this round were West end (yet to lose a game), along with Southside, Police Boys and Combined Saints.
With next weekend off for school holidays, the next round will be played on Frdiay 10/7 with TEDAS taking on Cumberland Park in the 10s, 12s and 14s, and the Under 16 match between TEDAS and Churchill. All other matches will be played on Saturday 11/7/09.
Don't forget, Interleague will be played at Sale on Tuesday 7/7 and Wednesday 8/7, and Grand Finals being on Sunday 12/7/09. Good luck to the three Traralgon teams, and if you can, it would be great to see people from the TDJFL cheering our boys on!
