DIVISION 1 SENIORS
Woori Yallock 9.18.72 v Gembrook Cockatoo 17.6.108
Woori Yallock is out of the finals after losing to Gembrook Cockatoo at the weekend. Gembrook gained the lead early by kicking 4.1 to 0.8 in the 1st quarter. Woori Yallock fought back in the 2nd to take a lead of 8 points into the 3rd. Was Woori Yallock’s inaccuracy of 5.12 to 5.4 going to vcome back and bite them. Gembrook pounced on the opportunity during the third term, kicking six goals to one to set up a final quarter that would see them run away with the match by seven goals. Craig Clarke (3 goals), Nathan Brown and Ricky Causer were best for Gembrook Cockatoo, whilst Anthony Witkowski (1 goal), Dallas Spencer and Joel Adams (1 goal) were best for Woori Yallock.
Monbulk 10.14.74 v Upwey Tecoma 16.15.111
Monbulk headed into this match after having the weekend off, and in many ways it can be seen as a hindrance as opposed to being a benefit. As expected, the game started off with not much separating these two sides – Monbulk kicked 2.6 to Upwey’s 2.2 in the first. Inaccuracy again may be the factor and Monbulk failed to convert in the second kicking 0.5 to Upwey’s 5.6. That was a big enough set back that Monbulk were unable to recover from. Upwey Tecoma led at every break after their dominant second quarter, and they never looked like giving up the lead, even when it looked as though Monbulk appeared to have rallied. This win now sees Upwey Tecoma straight into the grand final, with Monbulk playing Gembrook Cockatoo next week. Samuel Gooley (3 goals), Samuel Waters and Steven Brotja were best for Upwey Tecoma, whilst Luke McCormick, Shannon Koole and Chris Van Suylen were best for Monbulk.
DIVISION 1 UNDER 18s
Olinda Ferny Creek 9.8.62 v Yarra Glen 7.4.46
All day it proved to be difficult to separate these two teams, with the scores being just about even for almost the entire game. Olinda Ferny Creek had many opportunities to run away with the game for they had plenty of shots on goal, and their inaccuracy was one of the things that kept Yarra Glen in the match. Scores were level as 2.2 a piece at the first break, and by half time Olinda had managed to get in front by only two points. By three quarter time Olinda finally found the break they had been desperately searching for, even though it was only eight points, and they had obviously done just enough in the last quarter to beat Yarra Glen by only sixteen points. Mitchell Meadows (1 goal), Harry Cole and Brendan Thockloth were best for Olinda Ferny Creek, whilst Shaun Falkingham (1 goal), Ben Ashton (1 goal) and Jayden Erickson were best for Yarra Glen.
Upwey Tecoma 3.11.29 v Healesville 5.4.34
In what turned out to be a very low scoring game of football, Healesville only just managed to get the better of Upwey Tecoma. The first quarter saw Upwey Tecoma leading by only the one goal, whilst in the second quarter the roles reversed and Healesville gained the one goal lead heading into half time. Being kept goalless may just have been the thing that killed Upwey’s chances of winning the game, even though they only lost in the end by five points – no matter the difference, it’s always hard to come back and win when you’ve suffered a goalless half of footy. Having many more scoring shots than that of Healesville, Upwey really should have walked away as the winners, and the final quarter proved to be the most nail biting of all the quarters played. Kurtis Jones, Lachlan Wright and Jake Gerritzen were best for Healesville, whilst Keenan Hinton, Joshua Lowe and Mitchell Hannon (2 goals) were best for Upwey Tecoma.
DIVISION 2 SENIORS
Seville 8.11.59 v Alexandra 5.10.40
Having started off well, Seville managed to hold off a rampaging Alexandra to put them in next week’s grand final against Emerald. The first quarter saw things well and truly in Seville’s favour, kicking four goals to one – however, things took a turn when Alex started to work their way into the match, and by half time they were only down by 11 points. But with the pressure from both sides making it difficult for either side to play their usual style of footy, Alex were kept goalless for the third term, whilst Seville were only able to kick one themselves. With a handy three goal lead heading into the last quarter, this helped Seville to thwart any attempt Alexandra made to try and take the lead from them. Mitchell O’Donnell (1 goal), Michael Gavric (1 goal) and Leigh Aitkins were best for Seville, whilst Stephen Steiner, Zach Heaslip (1 goal) and Neil Oakley were best for Alexandra.
DIVISION 2 RESERVES
Emerald 4.5.29 v Belgrave 8.7.55
Emerald took on Belgrave in the Preliminary Final and they would have been the favourites. Belgrave had other ideas. In an outstanding 1st quarter Belgrave kicked 5.3 to Emerald’s 0.1. It was all over red rover from that point on and it was just going to be Belgrave by how much. What a performance from a team that finished 5th after the home and away season to now be playing in a Grand Final. Seville have easily accounted for Belgrave during the home and away season but Belgrave are inspired. Best for Belgrave were Adam Wilson (4 goals), Ryan Hurst (1 goal) and Robbie Matthews (1 goal). Emerald’s best were from Grant Minchin, Nick Jansen and Shane Pearton.
DIVISION 2 UNDER 18s
Emerald 4.8.32 v Yea 6.9.45
Yea have earned themselves spot in the Division 2 Grand Final against Seville next week with a fantastic win over Emerald at the weekend. Despite the slow start Yea slowly worked their way into the match keeping Emerald goalless in the second quarter giving them a 6 point lead heading into half time. Both sides proved to be wayward when kicking for goal, and kicking a goal apiece in the third quarter still had Yea leading by eight points. The last quarter turned out to be as exciting as anticipated, and Emerald didn’t go down without a fight – Yea produced a great last term to give them the breathing space they hadn’t had throughout the rest of the game. Jack Crowe (1 goal), William Graf and Jack Hodge were best for Yea, whilst Matthew Dompietro (1 goal), Casey Thomsen and Aaron Thomson were best for Emerald.
DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL
Healesville 33 v Wandin 57
Having lost to Upwey Tecoma the previous week, Wandin had to redeem themselves and they did so in a fine performance that saw them beat Healesville quite comfortably by twenty four goals. Both teams played a better game of netball than they have in recent weeks, with Wandin taking things up a notch. Their goallers proved to be much more accurate than the last time they played, and their run and carry through the centre court was one of the highlights that saw many turnovers come from Healesville. Melissa Martinov (39 goals), Nikki Phillips, Courtney McDonald and Lauren Close starred for Wandin in their win, demonstrating that they can definitely match it against Upwey Tecoma who they will be playing next week. Kathy Brown, Hayley Parrott, Catherine Duncan and Bianca Featherstone were best for Healesville.
Mount Evelyn 48 v Upwey Tecoma 46
In what was to be the game of the round, Mount Evelyn were lucky to walk away with the win, for Upwey Tecoma definitely had them on their toes and had backed them into a corner. Mount Evelyn of course rose to the challenge which saw them on the back foot for most of the game and when the game was almost lost and was just about won by Upwey with only about a minute or two to go, Mount Evelyn never gave up and refused to back down. The game was rough, the intensity was high and both sides put in their all – and with a crucial decision having been made with only minutes to go, Upwey looked as though they had finally broken Mount Evelyn’s winning streak. Kate Youlten, Jade Hottes, Ella Priestley and Jessica Jones (29 goals) were best for Mount Evelyn, whilst Krista Tomlinson, Tess Linkins (26 goals), Riley McLoughlin and Jordan Lingard (20 goals) were best for Upwey Tecoma.
DIVISION 2
A GRADE NETBALL
Seville 20 v Powelltown 33
Having possibly been favourites to play in the grand final throughout the season, Seville have suffered a loss a game short at the hands of Powelltown, who have had a great finals series thus far. Powelltown’s defenders proved to be on song through the match, getting the better of Seville’s goal shooters and putting them off whenever they put a shot up – they played from the front and were much quicker. Seville’s defenders were just as good, but Powelltown’s goallers were better – they never seemed to miss whenever they put a shot up, and they are now going to meet Emerald in next week’s grand final. Erin Williams, Stephanie Broadway (19 goals), Stephanie Muller and Ella Bound (14 goals) were best for Powelltown, whilst Riley Gentle, Zoe Abbruzzese (12 goals), Tania Hoare and Morgan Wyatt were best for Seville.
B GRADE NETBALL
Emerald 42 v Yea 30
This was always going to be a good quality game after finishing 2 & 3 respectively after the home and way season. Yea got out to a slim lead at qtr time but Emerald pegged them back by half time with some sharp shooting from Kylie Del Marco and strong defence from Lauren Moses & Kate Griffin. Emerald must have been inspired as they never let up and ran away winners by 12 goals. Best for emerald were Kate Griffin, Kylie Del Marco (38 goals) and Lauren Moses whilst Yea’s best were Amanda Akers, Janelle Kirby and Emma Baynes.
C GRADE NETBALL
Seville 22 v Powelltown 26
Seville came out firing with 8 goals to 6 in the first. Carroline Nyhuis was on target. Powelltown defence stood tall in the 2nd and they outscored Seville by 3 goals and took the lead at half time. Scores were all tied up at 3qtr time. It was set for a cracking last quarter. Powelltown’s drive through the centre and defence was awesome as they outscored Seville by 10 goals to make their way into a grand final. Seville’s best were Alexandra Penman, Carroline Nyhuis (19 goals) and Krystal Borgmeyer, while for Powelltown Miranda Walker, Nikita Allard and Jessica Mebbrey were in their best.
