THE GOOD

The Lady Heelers were always going to be up against it to reach the playoffs in their debut season but they have impressed the league with four wins to finish fifth on the ladder. They defeated Kilsyth in the first weekend before taking care of Queensland, Kilsyth (again) and the Stars to round out the season. While they struggled to put together a winning score at times, their defence was equal to the third-placed Stars which sets a great foundation for the coming years. Their leader on and off the court, Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy paced them with 11.9 points and 12.1 rebounds per game while Clare Nott (5.9 points) proved integral to their chances. They would have liked Deanna Smith to appear in more games, averaging 11.8 points and 9.3 boards in just four contests but 11-year old’s Lily Poulter’s four games were inspirational to watch.

THE BAD

After defeating Queensland in their first meeting, Red Dust fell just one win short of the top four courtesy of two subsequent losses to the Comets which ultimately proved their downfall. They owned the least effective offence in the competition, scoring almost eight points less than the Cobras per contest while only one member of the club who played a minimum amount of games averaged over double-digits.

STANDOUT PERFORMER

Doing a bit of everything on court, Georgia Inglis starred for the Lady Heelers with nine points, five rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. She also averaged over 39 minutes, playing the full 40 minutes in 12 contests and led the club for offensive boards. A strong end to the season saw Inglis improve her point production to 10.8 across her final seven outings.

Next Year

The only way is up for Red Dust after completing their first season in the league. Inspiring athletes both on and off the court, the Lady Heelers have a core base to build a team around and if they get a couple more scorers for 2018, playoffs are on the cards.
