Selections Camps for Men’s and

Women’s teams confirmed

The selection camps for both the men’s Goannas and the women’s Geckos national teams have been confirmed and will continue as planned. There will be one day initial camps in Brisbane and Melbourne, before a final two day camp in Melbourne when the final teams will be selected. The initial Brisbane camp is open to QLD, NSW, ACT and NT players, with the initial Melbourne camp open to NSW, ACT, VIC, SA and WA players. These initial camps will allow both Goannas and Geckos Head Coaches to provide detailed instruction on the drills, skills and fitness levels required to be selected in the national teams.

Costs for these camps will be $150 for players, with interstate players receiving up to $150.00 reimbursement for flights. (flight receipts will be required for reimbursement) The final camp will be a two day camp for all athletes, where skills and fitness testing will be used together with matches to select the final players. Cost will be $250 for players, with interstate players receiving up to $150.00 reimbursement for flights. (flight receipts will be required for reimbursement). The selection camp will be on Sunday October 17 at Auchenflower Stadium, Dixon Rd, Auchenflower from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Melbourne initial camp The camp will be held on Sunday October 24 (venue to be advised), from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Final Melbourne Selection Camp This two day camp will be held on Saturday Nov 6 and Sunday Nov 7, (venue to be advised). Successful players who will represent Australia will be announced the following week.

This is a unique opportunity to represent Australia and play nations from around the world in deaf basketball, as part of the team preparing for the 2013 Deaflympics in Athens Greece. The Geckos will travel to Palermo in September 2011 for the World Deaf Basketball Championships and the Goannas will also tour during 2011, in preparation for both teams qualification tournament at the 2012 Asia/Pacific Games in Seoul, Korea. Successful results at the 2012 Asia/Pacific Games are necessary for Australia to compete in the 2013 Deaflympics in Athens, Greece. The location of the Goannas tour is currently being discussed in detail.
