The squad was selected from the FFSA U12 Summer Zone Development program (E/S/W/N/Country)
Player selection was based on technical ability and took into consideration the following attributes of players.
The functional game skills:
Running with the ball
Striking the ball
First touch
1 v 1 (attack and defence)
Other prerequisites for a talented player:
Coordination and speed
Game ‘cleverness’ : making the right decisions ‘intuitively’
Eagerness to learn and be coachable
Perseverance
From the beginning of the program and going forward every measure has been put in place to ensure a consistent approach to player development is occurring. We believe this will play a key role in bringing the necessary changes and improvement needed for Junior Development
Some of the main objectives of the Program included
Placing development ahead of results
Focusing on the skilful instead of the powerful
Using mistakes as learning moments instead of players being punished
Encouraging individual play instead of forbidding individual play
Encouraging taking initiative/risks instead of forbidding taking initiatives/risks
Playing out purposely instead of the long ball
No isolated physical conditioning, all training done with ball
Learning the game by playing the game
Developing players understanding of 1 – 4 – 3 – 3 formation
Coaches were asked to
Be patient
Work on the basics/formation, positions
Use Repetition/demonstration/reinforcement
Focus on the positives/encouraging players to find a solution i.e. (playing out from the back)
The squad will train Twice a week and play mid week games.
A squad of 16 players will be selected later in the year to compete at the National Junior Championships in October.
