If this event was big on its own it has now been enhanced by the support of a true Rugby Union legend in the shape of Stirling Mortlock. We are proud to announce that Stirling Mortlock is the ambassador for the 2013 GIO National Wheelchair Rugby Championships, held 14 – 16 August at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, Sydney.
The Australian Rugby stalwart and former Wallaby skipper retired from the sport in 2012 after an amazing 15 years playing at the highest level. The record-breaking back played 80 tests for the Wallabies and has a list of accomplishments that put him in the elite category and distinguish him from those players before and after. With the Wallaby’s he won the Bledisloe and Tri-Nations trophies in 2000 and was part of four Super Rugby finals with the Brumbies in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004, taking home titles in 2001 and 2004.
As ambassador of the 2013 GIO National Wheelchair Rugby Championships Stirling will be appearing on the final day of competition on Friday to conduct meet and greets, have photo opportunities and to present medals.
“You might’ve seen some big clashes before, but nothing compares with the full-on action of wheelchair rugby. Join me at the finals of the 2013 GIO National Wheelchair Rugby Championship and support the best players in the country including members of Australia’s gold-medal winning team from the London Paralympic Games.”
More About Stirling Mortlock
At his peak Mortlock was a great goal-kicker, try-scorer and an excellent outside centre and winger. He scored 489 points for the Wallabies, putting him as the third highest all-time scorer, and remains the only Australian to have accumulated more than 1000 points in Super Rugby after 140 games played. In 2011, Stirling was awarded the Rod Macqueen Pursuit of Excellence Award and was also inducted into the Gordon Rugby Club Hall of Fame in recognition of outstanding contributions, achievement and club spirit.
On 26 January 2012, Stirling was awarded Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to rugby, particularly for his services as Captain of the Wallabies.
Mortlock, always a passionate and dignified individual, shone in a golden age of Australian rugby. Although most fans will long remember and treasure his impact on Rugby Union the man himself is passionate about giving back to various charitable groups. He is also an ambassador for Sporting Chance Cancer and Foundation 49’s.
