2011 15U GIRLS’ NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 2 RECAP


Game #6 – New Brunswick 47 Newfoundland 35

New Brunswick and Newfoundland started day 2 action with a 47-35 victory for team New Brunswick. It was New Brunswick’s first victory of the tournament, while it was the first loss for Newfoundland. New Brunswick led the low-scoring affair from beginning to end. Leading by 11 at half, they never looked back from there.  

Abby MacDonald of New Brunswick was the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Abby had a team high 12 points and 6 rebounds in the win. Kelsey Moore led Newfoundland with 11 points.

New Brunswick will look for back-to-back victories when they take on Manitoba Wednesday at 6:00 pm. Newfoundland hopes to get back into the win column against Manitoba on Wednesday morning.    
 

Game #7 – Ontario 75 British Columbia 55

Ontario defeated British Columbia 75-55 for its second win of the 2011 15U National Basketball Championships. Ontario went up by 8 after one period but BC battled back to tie the game at 29 going into half. Ontario went up for good in the third period to cruise to a 20 point victory.

The Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game was Ontario’s Kia Nurse. Kia had 20 points to go along with 8 steals and 6 rebounds. Lauren Yearwood missed out on a double-double by 1 rebound. She knocked in 20 points to go along with her 9 rebounds.

Ontario looks to go 3-0 in pool play when they face the tough Quebec squad. Game time is 8:15 pm on Wednesday. Alberta will battle BC, their neighbours to the west, Wednesday at 3:45 pm.

 

Game #8 – Saskatchewan 67 Manitoba 58

Manitoba 15U’s are still looking for their first win of the tournament after losing to Saskatchewan 67-58. Manitoba battled back from 9 points down in the fourth to narrow the deficit to 4 but they could not get any closer to that. Saskatchewan hit clutch free throws in the last minute to extend their lead to 9.  

Haley Mitchell of Saskatchewan was the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Haley had a nice game with 17 points and 12 rebounds in a winning effort. Nikki Majewski had a game high 18 points for Manitoba.

Manitoba will look for that elusive first victory when they play Newfoundland on Wednesday morning. That game will take place on centre court at 11:15 am. Saskatchewan’s next opponent is will be Nova Scotia. They will follow the MB and NL game at 1:30 pm on Wednesday.  

 

Game #9 – Quebec 62 Alberta 40

Quebec won its second consecutive game by defeating Alberta 62-40 in 15U play. Up by 11 after 3 periods, Quebec outscored Alberta 20-8 in the final period to secure the victory. The loss was the second consecutive for Alberta.    

Quebec’s Tamara Farquhar was the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. She accumulated 13 points and an astounding 21 rebounds for the winning Quebec side. Kacie Bosch of Alberta dropped a team high 10 points.  

 

Quebec will again take the court on Wednesday night when they face Ontario. Up for grabs is first place in their pool. Alberta will look to get into the win column when they face the winless BC squad Wednesday at 3:45 pm. All games are at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre.  

 

2011 17U GIRLS’ NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 2 RECAP

 

Game #7 – Saskatchewan 85 Prince Edward Island 49

Saskatchewan rebounded from a tough loss to Alberta on Monday to defeat PEI 85-49 Tuesday morning. Team Saskatchewan came out strong, outscoring PEI 22-4 in the opening period. Prince Edward Island did not have an answer to the early run and were playing catch-up the remainder of the game.

With 17 points and 5 rebounds, Charlotte Kot of team Saskatchewan was named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Quinn Dornstauder of Saskatchewan also had 17 points. PEI’s Karina Lazaric had a team high 13 points.  

Saskatchewan finishes 3rd in Pool B and will face the 3rd place team from Pool A on Wednesday afternoon. The winner of that game will advance into the quarter-finals. PEI finishes 4th in Pool B and will face Manitoba on Wednesday. The winner also advances to the quarters.  

 

Game #8 – Ontario 86 Alberta 41

Ontario assured themselves of first place in their pool with an 86-41 victory over Alberta. The win moves Ontario into the quarter-finals. With a 7 point lead at half, Ontario outscored Alberta 27-7 in the third period to put the game out of hand.

Dakota Whyte of Ontario had a game high 14 points to be named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Alberta’s leading scorer was Renee Byrne with 12 points. Abigail Fogg of Ontario was the games leading rebounder with 8.  

Ontario’s quarter-final opponent is yet to be determined but there game will take place on Thursday at 6:00 pm. Alberta’s next game will be Wednesday at 6:00 pm versus the loser of the Quebec and Nova Scotia game.  

 

Game #9 – Quebec 79 Nova Scotia 40

Quebec wrapped up the 1st seed in Pool C with a convincing 79-40 victory over team Nova Scotia. The game was never in doubt after Quebec opened on a 23-9 run. They scored 31 points in the fourth to put the game way out of reach. With the loss Nova Scotia will be ranked #2 coming out of Pool C.  

Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau of Quebec was the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game with her 15 point and 10 rebound effort. Nova Scotia was led by a 15 point night from Alison Keough.    

Quebec will next face the 2nd ranked team out of Pool A. That game takes place on Wednesday at 8:15 pm. Nova Scotia battles with Alberta at 6:00 pm on Wednesday with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals.    

 

Game #10 – British Columbia 76 New Brunswick 36

A 23-7 run in the first period paved the way to an easy win for team British Columbia. They defeated New Brunswick 76-36 to conclude day 2 action on Tuesday. The win gives BC first place in their pool while New Brunswick’s loss puts them into the pools basement.

Emma Wolfram of BC had a huge game with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Those numbers earned her the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. New Brunswick’s Laura Kaye had a game high 8 points in a losing cause.      

British Columbia’s quarter final match will take place on Wednesday at 8:15 pm. Their opponent is not known at this time. New Brunswick will now face Saskatchewan, with the winner advancing to the quarters.
