15U WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 3 RECAP

 

Game #10 – Manitoba 61 Newfoundland 58

Manitoba and Newfoundland opened up day 3 action with a nail-biting 61-58 victory for the host Manitoba squad. The win was the first of the tournament for Toba. Manitoba had a slow start to the game, going into half down by 9 but outscored Newfoundland 20-11 in the third to take their first lead since early in the first period. Nikki Majewski of Manitoba hit a huge 3 pointer with under a minute to play to put Manitoba up 3. That proved to be the winning points as Newfoundland failed to score on their last possession.

The Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game was Nikki Majewski of Manitoba. She had a game high 21 points and added 13 rebounds. Point Guard Susanna Namgung added 20 points for Manitoba. Kelsey Moore of Newfoundland led her team in scoring with 21 points.    

Manitoba hopes to continue their winning ways when they play New Brunswick at 6:00 pm later today. Newfoundland’s next game will be on Thursday, when they take the court against a tough Nova Scotia team.

 

Game #11 – Nova Scotia 83 Saskatchewan 43

Nova Scotia won its 3rd consecutive game with a convincing 83-43 win over Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan now has 2 losses to go along with 1 victory in the 2011 15U National Basketball Championships. Nova Scotia outscored Saskatchewan by 19 points in the first period and it was clear sailing from there.

Daneesha Provo had a huge game for the winning Nova Scotia side. She had 25 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 9 steals. Those incredible numbers earned her the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Christina McCusker had a team high 10 points for Saskatchewan.

Nova Scotia will look to go perfect in pool play when they square off against Newfoundland at 9:00 am on Thursday. Saskatchewan will look to rebound against New Brunswick, that game also takes place at 9:00 am on Thursday morning.

 

Game #12 – Alberta 61 British Columbia 46

Alberta upset British Columbia 61-46 to earn their first victory of the tournament. They had previously lost to Ontario and Quebec. BC finds themselves with 3 losses and finishes last in their pool of 4 teams. BC went on an early 17-8 run but it was all Alberta after that. Alberta outscored BC in each of the last three periods to secure the victory.

The recipient of the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game was Drew Knox of Alberta. Drew had 13 points to go along with 13 rebounds and 7 assists in the afternoon match.   Jessie Brown had a game high 14 points for the losing British Columbia team.

Both teams will advance to the quarter-finals. By placing 3rd in Pool A, Alberta will face the 2nd place team in Pool B. That game takes place at 3:45 pm on Thursday. BC will face the 1st place team in Pool B at 6:00 pm on Thursday.

 

Game #13 – Manitoba 70 New Brunswick 69 [OT]

In the most thrilling game up to this point, Manitoba staged an incredible comeback to defeat New Brunswick 70-69. Manitoba was down 18 points at half but outscored New Brunswick 18-10 in the third and 20-10 in the fourth period to shock New Brunswick and force overtime. After New Brunswick missed 2 free throws with 20 seconds left in overtime Manitoba rebounded the ball, drove down the court and scored with 15 seconds remaining. New Brunswick threw up a buzzer beater shot but missed to send the Manitoba fans home ecstatic.

The Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game was Manitoba’s Emma Arnott. Emma had game highs in points and rebounds with 23 and 14. Nikki Majewski added 16 points for the host team. Abby McDonald put down 22 points for the visiting New Brunswick team.  

Manitoba finishes pool play at 2-2 and is forced to play the waiting game to see if they will advance to the medal round. With two games left in their pool on Thursday morning, there is a chance that three teams could finish at 2-2 which would force a tie breaker. New Brunswick is now at 1 win and 2 losses and must win their game on Thursday morning, versus Saskatchewan, to have a chance at advancing.

 

Game #14 – Ontario 75 Quebec 69

First place in Pool A was decided when Ontario knocked off Quebec 75-69. Ontario finishes 1st in Pool A and has a buy into the semis. Quebec finishes 2nd in their pool and also has a buy into the championship semi-finals. Ontario carried an 8 point lead into the fourth period and held on for victory.

Nada ge Pwviose of team Quebec was the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Nada had a game high 18 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Kia Nurse scored 16 points for team Ontario.  

Both Ontario and Quebec’s semi-final games will take place on Friday evening. Ontario will play at 8:15 pm while Quebec takes the floor at 6:00 pm. Both teams opponents will be decided on Thursday.

 

 

17U WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 3 RECAP

 

Game #11 – Saskatchewan 70 New Brunswick 47

Saskatchewan advances to the quarter-finals with a 70-47 victory over New Brunswick. Saskatchewan outscored New Brunswick 18-7 to carry a 15 point lead into the half-time break. New Brunswick did not have an answer in the second half as they were outscored by 8 in the final two periods.  

With 10 points and 15 rebounds, the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game was Saskatchewan’s Quinn Dornstauder. Charlotte Kot of Saskatchewan and Tori McCarty of New Brunswick both scored 13 points.

Saskatchewan and British Columbia will face each other in one quarter final match. The game will take place on Thursday at 8:15 pm. With the loss, New Brunswick moves onto the tournament B-side and will play the loser of the Nova Scotia and Alberta game that is being played later today.      

 

Game #12 – Manitoba 76 Prince Edward Island 43

Manitoba will now meet Ontario in the quarter-finals thanks to their 76-43 victory over Prince Edward Island. Manitoba jumped out to an early lead and led all the way until the end.

Jane McLaughlin of PEI had a big game with 28 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 steals. She was named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Manitoba was led offensively by Megan Noonan’s 17 points. Emily Potter collected 10 rebounds in the win.

Manitoba’s quarter final game against Ontario will take place at 6:00 pm on Thursday night. Prince Edward Island moves to be B-side of the medal round and will play again on Thursday at 3:45 pm.        

 

Game #13 – Nova Scotia 63 Alberta 56

In the first quarter-final match-up of the 2011 Canadian 17U National Basketball Championships it was Nova Scotia earning a semi-final birth after they defeated Alberta 63-56. Down by 7 at half-time, Nova Scotia went on a 25-14 run in the third period to take the lead into the fourth quarter. Alberta had no answer in the fourth allowing Nova Scotia to slip into the semis.

Ainsley MacIntyre of Nova Scotia was rewarded for her 20 point and 11 rebound night by being named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Alison Keough scored 17 points for Nova Scotia. Alberta’s offensive leader was Jordan MacLean, with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Nova Scotia will play their semi-final match at 6:00 pm on Friday. Their opponent is yet to be determined. Alberta moves to the tournament B-side and will play on Thursday at 1:30 pm.        

 

Game #14 – Quebec 91 Newfoundland 41

Quebec handled Newfoundland with relative ease in their quarter-final game. Quebec outscored Newfoundland 27-9 in the first period on way to a 91-41 win. Quebec now moves into the semi-finals while Newfoundland moves into the B-side bracket.    

With her 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, Sarah St-Fort was awarded the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Quebec’s leading scorer was Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau with 15 points. The games leading scorer was Hannah Jardine of Newfoundland who poured in 20 points in a losing cause.

Quebec will play their semi-final game on Friday at 8:15 pm while Newfoundland next plays on Thursday at 3:45 vs. Prince Edward Island. Quebec’s opponent will be decided on Thursday.
