2011 15U WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 4 RECAP

 

Game #15 – Nova Scotia 57 Newfoundland 48

 

By defeating Newfoundland 57-48, Nova Scotia guarantees the number 1 seed in Pool B of the 15U National Basketball Championships. Nova Scotia started slowly but after a 20-4 run in the second period they were in control for the remainder of the game.

 

20 points and 7 rebounds by Nova Scotia’s Jayla Verney earned her the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game.   Newfoundland’s Rosemary Stanoev led her team in scoring with 9 points.

 

Nova Scotia now crosses over to play British Columbia in the quarter-finals. That game takes place Thursday at 6:00 pm. Newfoundland faces New Brunswick at 8:15 pm in a round-robin for placement.

 

Game #16 – Saskatchewan 55 New Brunswick 53

 

New Brunswick lost its second consecutive heart breaker, this time to Saskatchewan, by a 55-53 score. Saskatchewan was down by 3 points with a minute remaining when Rebecca Burns rebounded a missed free throw and sunk a jumper to put her team down by 1. With 6 seconds left Haley Mitchell hitting a running floater to have Saskatchewan go up 1 and secure the victory. The victory knocks Manitoba to the round robin for placement due to their loss to team Saskatchewan.

 

The Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game was Saskatchewan’s Britton Belyk. She had a team high 11 points and 4 assists. The games leading scorer was Katie Daley of New Brunswick with 16 points.

 

Saskatchewan will face Alberta in a quarter-final match at 6:00 pm on Thursday while New Brunswick and Newfoundland play at 8:15 in a round-robin for placement.

 

Game #17 – Alberta 62 Saskatchewan 33

 

Alberta moves into the championship semi-finals after disposing of Saskatchewan 62-33. Saskatchewan will play in the 5th place game on Friday at 11:15 am. Alberta’s victory was never in doubt as they outscored Saskatchewan in each of the four periods.

 

Kacie Bosch of Alberta was named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Kacie had a game high 20 points while Saskatchewan was led by Britton Belyk’s 9 point game.

 

Alberta will face Quebec on Friday at 6:00 pm to determine of the final two teams at the 15U National Basketball Championships.

 

Game #18 – British Columbia 71 Nova Scotia 60

 

British Columbia punched its ticket into the semi-finals with a hard fought 71-60 victory over previously unbeaten Nova Scotia. BC outscored the Nova Scotia team by fourteen in the first period and held on from there.

 

Despite playing on the losing side, Jayla Verney was named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game for scoring a whopping 29 points. Lauren Yearwood of BC had a team high 15 points. BC’s Michelle Bos added 14 points and 11 rebounds.  

 

BC’s semi-final opponent will be team Ontario. The two teams will tip-off at 8:15 pm on Friday night. Nova Scotia will play for 5th place against Saskatchewan on Saturday at 11:15 am.

 

Game #19 – Newfoundland 44 New Brunswick 38

 

In a round robin for placement game between Newfoundland and New Brunswick it was Newfoundland edging New Brunswick by a 44-38 score. It was the third straight close defeat for the New Brunswick squad. New Brunswick had a one point lead going into the fourth period but Newfoundland dug deep to outscore them 16-9 in the fourth to come out victorious.

 

Newfoundland’s Rosemary Stanoev was named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game thanks to her game high 18 points. Sarah McGeachy of New Brunswick had a team high 10 points.  

 

Newfoundland’s next game will be against the host Manitoba team on Friday at 3:45 pm while New Brunswick has a day off before finishing their tournament against Manitoba on Saturday at 9:00 am.  

 

2011 17U WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 4 RECAP

 

Game #15 – Alberta 70 New Brunswick 67

 

Alberta and New Brunswick played their B-side game which saw Alberta come out on top by a 70-67 score. Alberta gained control in the third period by outscoring New Brunswick 21-9 in the frame. The fourth period went back and forth but Alberta hit a couple of clutch free throws with less than a minute remaining on way to victory.      

 

Maddie Rodgers of Alberta had a double-double scoring 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds. The solid effort allowed her to be named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Chelsey Collette of New Brunswick had a 10 rebound, 17 point game.

 

Alberta will look for two more victories to allow them a 5th place finish in the tournament. There next game will be against the loser of the British Columbia and Saskatchewan quarter-final game. New Brunswick will conclude their tournament when they play in the 9th place game on Friday at 3:45 pm.          

 

Game #16 – Newfoundland 67 Prince Edward Island 56

 

Newfoundland faced a fellow Maritime province on Thursday afternoon. Newfoundland found victory by outscoring Prince Edward Island 67-56. Newfoundland was up 6 heading into the fourth period and played strong defence in the fourth so that PEI could not stage a comeback.  

 

Sarah Hickman of Newfoundland was the recipient of the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game award. Sarah compiled 10 points and 8 rebounds in the win. The games high scorer was Jane McLaughlin of PEI with 17 points.

 

Newfoundland will play again on Friday against the loser of the Manitoba and Ontario quarter-final. The winner of that game will play in the 5th place game on Saturday. PEI finds themselves in the 9th place game on Friday versus New Brunswick.            

 

Game #17 – Ontario 86 Manitoba 44

 

Ontario was too much for Manitoba to handle in their quarter-final match, as Ontario steamed to an 86-44 victory. The game was relatively close at half, with Ontario holding a 33-24 lead, but the Ontario team turned it up in the second half route to an easy win.

 

Ontario’s Katie Polischuk had 18 points on 5-9 shooting and also added 4 rebounds and 2 blocks for the winning Ontario side. Those efforts were rewarded by her being named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Dakota Whyte also added 18 points for Ontario. Manitoba was led by Winnipeg’s Emily Potter who put in 13 points and added 9 rebounds, both team highs.

 

Ontario will have a tough semi-final game on Friday at 8:15 pm when they battle with their neighbours Quebec. That game will take place on centre court. Manitoba moves to the consolation side and will face team Newfoundland next. The winner of the Manitoba and Newfoundland game will play for 5th place on Saturday.

 

Game #18 – British Columbia 82 Saskatchewan 63

 

British Columbia defeated Saskatchewan by an 82-63 score to move into a semi-final match against Nova Scotia. Down by 13 after the first period Saskatchewan came out flying in the second to cut the lead to 3 going into half. The third period went back and forth before BC put Saskatchewan away for good with a 23-10 run in the fourth period.

 

Alisha Roberts of the winning BC side had 19 points and 5 assists to be named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Paige Crozon of Saskatchewan had a game high 21 points. Saskatchewan’s Quinn Dornstauder had a 13 point, 10 rebound effort in the loss.  

 

The British Columbia and Nova Scotia semi-final will take place on Friday at 6:00 pm. Saskatchewan now faces Alberta on the B-side of the tournament with the hopes of winning that game to move into the 5th place game.
