DAY 5 RECAP - 15U & 17U WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

2011 15U WOMEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 5 RECAP

 

Game #20 – Manitoba 61 Newfoundland 56

Manitoba defeated Newfoundland for the second time in the 15U girl’s category, this time by a 61-56 score. It was the second tight battle between the two teams, with Manitoba edging them on both occasions.  Manitoba had the lead after each of the first three periods and held on in the fourth to come out on top.

Manitoba had a balanced scoring effort with 4 players in double digits. Susanna Namgung, Emma Arnott, and Sarah Ibrahim each scored 10 points. Nikki Majewski was the team leader with 13 points. Maria Carroll of Newfoundland had a game high 16 points. The Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game was Emma Arnott of Manitoba. Emma added 9 rebounds to go along with her 10 points.

The three team round robin for placement between Manitoba, Newfoundland, and New Brunswick has one game left, between Manitoba and New Brunswick, to determine the 7th, 8th, and 9th ranked teams of the tournament. With a victory over New Brunswick on Saturday morning Manitoba would finish 7th.  

 

Game #21 – Quebec 70 Alberta 55

Quebec will play the winner of the Ontario and British Columbia game in the gold medal match of the 15U National Basketball Championships. They got into the gold medal game by defeating Alberta 70-55 in the semi-final. Alberta found themselves up by 2 at half but Quebec stormed out of the gates in the third, outscoring Alberta 27-12 in the third to take the lead, a lead they never gave up.

With a team high 14 points, Eliane Potvin of Quebec was named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Kacie Bosch of Alberta had a game high 16 points for the losing Albert side.

Quebec waits for the winner of the British Columbia and Ontario game to see who they will face in the gold medal game on Saturday; that game will start at 6:00 pm. Alberta will go for bronze at 1:30 pm versus the loser of the BC and Ontario semi.

 

Game #22 – Ontario 65 British Columbia 53

It will be an Ontario and Quebec gold medal match in the 15U category after Ontario defeated British Columbia 65-53 on Friday night. A 20-10 run in the second period put Ontario up by 9 at half. In the second half BC did not allow Ontario to extend that lead by much but they could not chip away either.

Mikalah Mulrain of Ontario was 1 rebound away from a double-double, as she noticed 13 points and 9 rebounds. She was awarded the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Jessie Brown had a game high 14 points for team BC.

Ontario and Quebec battle for gold on Saturday at 6:00 pm. British Columbia and Alberta will play for bronze at 1:30 pm.

Game #19 – Alberta 73 Saskatchewan 64

Alberta moves into the 5th place game, against Manitoba, at the 2011 17U National Basketball Championships. They did so by disposing of Saskatchewan 73-64 on Friday afternoon. With Alberta up by 31 after the first half, Saskatchewan started to eat away at the lead in the third period, but they could not come closer than 9.

Renee Byrne of Albert continued her strong tournament with a game high 17 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Renee was named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Charlotte Kot led Saskatchewan with 13 points.  

The 5th place game between Alberta and Manitoba will take place on Saturday morning at 11:15 am. Newfoundland and Saskatchewan play for 7th place at 9:00 am on Saturday.

 

Game #20 – Manitoba 75 Newfoundland 58

Manitoba got past Newfoundland 75-58 to earn a spot in tomorrow’s 5th place game. The loss by Newfoundland moves them into the 7th place game on Saturday. Manitoba, leading by 15 at half, was in control of the game from beginning to end.    

Kerri Kuzbyt of Manitoba had a strong game, scoring 20 and adding 6 assists for the winning side. She was awarded the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Newfoundland was led by Hannah Jardine’s 20 points and 13 rebounds.

 

Manitoba will take on Alberta in Saturday’s 5th place game. That game takes place at 11:15 on centre court. Newfoundland and Saskatchewan will play at 9:00 am for 7th place.  

 

Game #21 – New Brunswick 77 Prince Edward Island 43

New Brunswick won its first game of the 2011 U17 National Basketball Championships by defeating PEI 77-43. Prince Edward Island ends their tournament winless. Up by 8 in the first period New Brunswick went on a 20-6 run in the second to put the game out of reach.

Chelsey Collette of New Brunswick was awarded the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Chelsey had 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists for New Brunswick. PEI’s offensive leader was Rayelle Morrison who had a game high 15 points.

New Brunswick ends up ranked 9th and Prince Edward Island 10th in the 17U girl’s category.

 

Game #22 – British Columbia 77 Nova Scotia 63

British Columbia will vie to become the 2011 17U National Basketball Champions after they defeated Nova Scotia 77-63 in the first semi-final of the night. Nova Scotia jumped on top by 1 after the first period but British Columbia outscored Nova Scotia in the final three periods.

Kolbie Orum of British Columbia had 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winning British Columbia side. She received the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Alisha Roberts led BC in scoring with 19 points. Ainslie MacIntyre of Nova Scotia had a team high 14 points and added 8 rebounds.

The 17U gold medal match between British Columbia and the winner of the Ontario/Quebec game will take place on Saturday at 8:15 pm. Nova Scotia will face the loser of the Ontario/Quebec game in the bronze medal game.

 

 

Game #23 – Ontario 73 Quebec 42

It was expected to be a close game but it turned into a cake walk for team Ontario as they downed Quebec 73-42 to complete play on Friday night. Ontario jumped out early, going into half up 45-17, and never looked back from there.  

Dakota Whyte, the point guard for Ontario, led the way with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals to be named the Nothers/Home Run Sports player of the game. Jenn Silver led Quebec with 8 points.

The 17U gold medal match between British Columbia and Ontario will take place on Saturday at 8:15 pm. Nova Scotia will face Quebec in the bronze medal game at 3:45 pm.
