Pacific Games opened by French President

The 14th Pacific Games has been officially opened in a spectacular ceremony at Numa Daly stadium.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has officially declared the Games open, in front of 2,000 spectators.

Rising stars, tennis player Nicola N'Godrela and swimmer Lara Grangeon carried the Tricolour and the Kanak flags for the home team.

Competition has already begun ahead of the ceremony, with Tuvalu scoring the first goal of the Games soccer competition.

Athletes will be competing in 28 sports over the next two weeks.

More than 150,000 spectators are expected.
