VCL kicks goals in Shepparton

The second Victorian Champions League regional gala round wrapped up in Shepparton on Sunday, with over 750 players taking part in 42 matches over the weekend.

Shepparton is the only regional centre to host a VCL gala round in all five seasons of the league’s existence, and last weekend’s event was another fine example of the young football talent blossoming around Victoria.

The locals had mixed results, with Rivers FC winning six and drawing one of their fourteen matches. While winning is good, the VCL places an emphasis on playing an attractive and possession-based style of football in line with the Football Federation Australia National Curriculum with teams receiving technical and respect points based on how well they adhere to this.

FFV CEO Mark Rendell said that from all reports, the Shepparton gala was an event enjoyed by all.

“The initial feedback we’ve gotten on the event has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said.

“Shepparton is one of our favourite venues to stage large football events and this past weekend has been another success.

“The VCL aims to provide a pathway for the next batch of football stars, and I’m told that the performances on the weekend were very impressive.”

The next VCL gala round will be held in Melbourne in 1-2 December, with the third regional gala round of the season will be in Bendigo on 8-9 December.

The Victorian Champions League is the state’s representative junior competition, with the best players from 13 regions playing off in a league format in boys and girls age groups.
