USA sharp shooter 'scoots' into stingray

Stingrays Basketball is pleased to announce 6’4 point guard Scooter Renkin as their second US import player for 2014.  Renkin hails from Virginia and was a star at the University of Indiana Pennsylvania (UIP) in his four years as a Crimson Hawk.

Renkin will arrive in Australia on Monday and the 3-point sharp shooter is looking forward to the opportunity, “I am very humbled at the opportunity to play for Corio Bay.  This opportunity is a once in a lifetime experience” said Renkin. “I want to make my family and friends back home proud, as well as everyone in the Corio Bay family,” added Renkin.

The high scoring guard was a star in college winning championships with his university, experience that  will be valuable as a Stingray in 2014, “There's always pressure playing for a great team and great fans, but that is good pressure” Renkin told @StingraysMedia.  “That’s the type of pressure that great players thrive under, and I'm prepared to make everyone at Corio Bay proud to call me one of their own,” added Renkin.  “I know we will need to take it one game at a time because that is the only way to approach a season after winning a championship,” said Renkin.

Renkin has a reputation as a fierce competitor, an attribute he will not be alone with on a roster boasting Paul Hutchison, Jason Reardon & Luke Osborn.  Renkin gave @StingraysMedia some insight the competitive reputation he has, “I hate losing more than I love winning and I will leave everything out on the court for the team and Stingray fans,” said Renkin.  “I want to bring an electricity to the Stingray stadium and an enthusiasm that is unmatched by any other team in the league” added Renkin.

Stingrays Head Coach Dan Riches feels Renkin is a perfect fit for his 2014 roster, “His skill package is vast, he is a big guard which gives us flexibility defensively and he can score from everywhere” said Riches.  “We wanted a creator, a guy that can breakdown defences and create for our team offensively and be able to put the ball in the hole also” added Riches.  “With NCAA regulations restricting Stefan (Osborn) to play at state championship level we needed to get some firepower offensively and Scooter brings that to us,” said Riches.

There is some eerie connection between Renkin and Stingrays basketball as Riches explained, “I first saw Scooter when he was a 17 year old varsity player on his high school team in Blue Ridge school in Virginia”. “I was running a Stingrays junior USA Tour and we played a game at his school when I saw him play.  The ironic part is that I next saw him was when he was staring at UIP, the university that Stefan (Osborne) was being recruited by.  It’s a small world but the hoops world is smaller,” said Riches

As with Stingrays other US Import Duane Johnson, this is Scooter’s first time to the Australian shores and he is looking forward to plenty away from the Stingray Stadium court also, “I haven't heard a bad word spoken about Australia and so many of the people here in the US have dreams of one day visiting Australia because they too have heard so many great things about your country” said Renkin.  “I just look forward to exploring the region and taking in the Australian culture. I also look forward to playing basketball for a great fan base, and meeting all the people in the Corio Bay Stingray family,” added Renkin.
