Hello all
I am delighted to inform you all that we have now booked a date for the referees’ and scorers’ workshop.
It will be on Saturday 23rd February, at Dartford Technology College, from 13.00 to 17.00.
Entry fee will be £5 per person, as mentioned below, and this will include your own new whistle (with lanyard). Bargain!
Participants will need to remember to bring along a pen, as we have put together a practice exercise as part of the workshop. They also need to be ready to play in a practice/scrimmage game, to give people the chance at having a go at refereeing.
We would ideally like to see at least 2 people from every club attend – don’t forget, this will make your lives a bit easier if you have club members who are a bit more confident helping out at matches. We need at least 14 participants to make the event work as we would like.
We need to plan for materials etc, so please let me have the names of the people who will be joining us. Please let me have names no later than 31st January.
We intend to try to make the afternoon as much fun as possible – we want to make the workshop participative, and everyone will get the chance to have a go at 1st / 2nd ref. If we have enough people along, participants can have a go at scoring/linesperson, too.
I look forward to hearing from you all.
Ian Ruddock
The Workshop is expected to cover the following areas:
- Session 1 – Simple mechanics of controlling a game:
|
- Session 3 – tricky calls:
- players reaching over the net / playing a ball they are not ‘entitled’ to play
- first team touch
- quality of handling
- players out of rotation – how to spot
|
- Session 2 – running the scoresheet:
- basic operation – common errors to avoid
- recording time-outs & substitutions
- recording sanctions / penalties
- recording timings
- ruling off at the end of each set
- totalling it all up at the end – what to check for
- practice at running a scoresheet – hypothetical situation and self-assessment
|
- Session 4 – practical application
- scrimmage match between workshop participants
- everyone gets a go at 1st and second ref
- possibly combine with refereeing a Foundation League match as part of the event – an opportunity to run a scoresheet in a live environment
|
- Sessions 1-3 will be theoretical, and we hope the 3 sessions should be completed within 90 minutes
- Sessions will be Q&A based/participative, and are not intended to be a download/death by PowerPoint!
- Session 4 will be a practical session
- Cost £5 per person, which will include your own brand new whistle (so you don’t have to share with everyone else!)
- We believe we can accommodate up to 30 people, so plenty of room for all
