The Olympic Legacy was clear for all to see on Thursday (3rd October) at The Hayesbrook School when over 50 pupils representing 8 teams from local primary schools took part in a Sitting Volleyball festival. The event was part of the ‘Love our Legacy’ Project delivered by The Tonbridge & West Kent School Sport Partnership.
Charlotte Twydell who organised the festival said: “Following London 2012, there was a huge demand from schools for a wider range of sports to be made available locally. Sports like Sitting Volleyball really captured the imagination of young people and it is a fantastic inclusive sport that everyone can take part in.”
The ‘Love our Legacy’ project started with an Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Day in February where taster sessions were delivered in Handball, Fencing, Judo and Sitting Volleyball. The Tonbridge & West Kent School Sport Partnership then organised training sessions in Sitting Volleyball and Handball for local primary school teachers to enable delivery of the sports to continue within the local schools.
Jo Heath, School Games Organiser forThe Tonbridge & West Kent School Sports Partnership, said: “The Olympic and Paralympic Games has had a real impact at a local level and through the ‘Love our Legacy’ project we have already been able to deliver 5 new Olympic and 2 new Paralympic sports to our schools. A wide range of young people have been inspired to take part and many competing today have never previously represented their school”.
The schools that took part in the festival were St James’ Junior School, Temple Grove Academy, Hever Primary and Kingsnorth Primary. The event was also supported by sports leaders from The Hayesbrook School.
