Chloe Magee: All Donegal’s Olympians will be honoured

The nominees for the 2012 Donegal Sports Star Awards have been announced by the organising committee ahead of the big annual presentation function, which takes place in the Mount Errigal Hotel on Friday, January 25th.

There will be 27 adult category winners who will step forward to receive their presentations on the night from special guest Billy Walsh the Irish Olympic Boxing Coach.

In addition there will be eight primary and secondary schools awards which will be presented by the Mayor of Donegal Cllr Frank McBrearty on behalf of the County Council who are the overall sponsors of the sports function which is being staged for a remarkable 37th successive year.

There are a total of 151 nominees in the 34 categories with two further very special presentations to be made on the night including the overall award which last year went to Newtowncunningham Clay Pigeon Shooter Jim Doherty. A ‘Special Recognition’ honour for another sporting star will also be one of the highlights of the glittering ceremonial function.

Just three nominees know ahead of the event that they are winners including Special Athlete, Daniel McBrearty, Atlantic Special Olympic Club, Killybegs; Para-Athlete, James Boyle, Dungloe (Irish Amputee Soccer Team) and the Hall of Fame, Eamonn Coyle, Raphoe A.B.C. The judging panel will sit down to decide on the winners in the other categories in the next fortnight. For further information on the event visit donegalsportsstarawards.ie.

All Donegal’s representatives at the Summer Olympics in London (Ann Marie McDaid, Ramelton, Brendan Boyce, Letterkenny A.C. Catriona Jennings, Rathfarnham A.C., Chloe Magee, Raphoe Rena McCarron-Rooney, Buncrana, Tori Pena, Finn Valley A.C. and team manager Patsy McGonagle, Finn Valley A.C.) will be recognised at an event, which brings all the county’s sporting achievers together under the one roof for only time in the year to socialise and enjoy a great night put on by the Donegal Sports Star committee including dinner and an opportunity to look back at 2012 courtesy of extensive video footage which will is guaranteed to entertain the guests.
