Taree West take primary school basketball title

Saxby’s Stadium has been the hottest ticket in town on Saturday mornings throughout term four with teams of players from primary schools across the Manning Valley engaged in battle for the Saxby’s Stadium Cup.

The final and playoff for third position were played on Saturday morning and both games produced very entertaining basketball to wrap up the competition for 2012.

St Josephs claimed third place with a very impressive performance against Wingham mixed in a game dominated by Kane Evans from St Joseph’s who led the scoring with 18 points. Reece Jeffriess (8) also played well with Jack Hayward and Dane Wallis contributing 6 points each. Jack Brood topped the scoring for Wingham mixed with good support coming from Zane Dawson and Miah Mitchell-Deak.

The final between Wingham boys and Taree West started slowly and after ten minutes of play Taree West was ahead 2-0 with Rory Mitchell being the only scorer. Things brighten up in the second quarter and by half time Taree West had pushed the margin out to 6 points to be ahead 12 to 6.

Wingham fought back hard in the third quarter to outscore their opponents and reduce the margin to just 4 points and be down 22 to 18 heading into the final term.

Both teams continued to compete well with Taree West having some anxious moments in the lead up to the full time siren but they held on to take the game and the Saxby’s Stadium Cup 30 to 22.

Sophie Watson and Trae Gersback led the charge for Taree West to finish with 8 points each while for Wingham, Harrison Lewis and Blake Carey, both landed 6 points.

The competition conducted throughout term four this year was just the third Saturday morning primary school competition played at Saxby’s Stadium and Taree West, now have their name engraved on the Cup to join the previous winners, Forster andSt Joseph’s.

Children leaving primary school this year are reminded that basketball for high school students in played at Saxby’s Stadium on Tuesday afternoons from 4.00pm and those children who will be in school years 4, 5 or 6 in 2013 can once again be involved in Saturday morning primary school basketball when it fires up in term one next year.
