SWQ Thunder Women have announced they will take on Brisbane Roar’s Westfield W-League team this Saturday at Gatton Soccer Club.

The match is the latest in Roar’s preparation for the upcoming campaign in the national top flight which commences in early November.

It follows on from Roar's behind closed doors friendly against PlayStation 4 NPL Women’s Queensland Champions The Gap FC last weekend.

Thunder are coming off the back of their most successful season yet in PlayStation 4 NPL Women’s competition – falling just short of a maiden Finals Series appearance with a fifth place finish.

Acting Thunder Women’s coach Anthony Bigby said the fixture is a much welcome early start for Thunder’s preparations for 2017.

“This is a rare opportunity for our girls to challenge themselves and see what it is like to play against some of the best female footballers in the country,” Bigby explained.

“We normally wouldn’t start our prep-season until November, so this has triggered an early start. The girls are all very excited at this opportunity and have been working hard.”

“We’re looking to improve on our fifth place finish next and a solid pre-season starting with this training game against the Roar is the perfect start.”

Thunder are expected to field a side featuring a number of fresh faces looking to push their case for inclusion to the south-west region’s top women’s club side for next year.

The match coincides with Gatton Soccer Club’s – one of Thunder’s catchment clubs - end of season celebrations.
