Souths United have stormed to a 5-1 win over Brisbane Olympic FC at Wakerley Park on Sunday evening, thanks in large part to a second-half showcase from Kirsten McGilvray.

Following a tight first half, with the only goal falling to Souths' Elise Franco, the second half was dominated by McGilvray and strong defensive pressure by Souths.

Olympic, particularly keeper Anastasia Mavrick, was stoic and committed in defence, but Souths posed too many dangers up front and secured a crucial three points well before full-time.

Souths continue their claim for a top two spot when they play Western Pride at home, while Olympic face the hard task of toppling competition pacesetters Peninsula Power away.

Key Moments

2' - GOAL FOR SOUTHS - Elise Franco receives the ball from the edge of the 18-yard box and chips the ball over Anastasia Mavrick.

39' - CHANCE FOR SOUTHS - Imogen Noon sprints down the right-hand flank and plays the ball to Deanna Thompson whose strike is intercepted by Mavrick.

50' - CHANCE FOR SOUTHS - Elise Franco intercepts Olympic's play out from the back and manages to slip through the defensive line, but Mavrick forces her wide.

65' - GOAL FOR SOUTHS - Kirsten McGilvray wins a 50/50 tackle and runs into the 6-yard box unimpeded. Her initial strike collides with Mavrick who fumbles and McGilvray taps in the richochet.

70' - GOAL FOR SOUTHS - Tayler Stevens sprints down the flank and plays the ball to Deanna Thompson, who turns and shoots on the edge of the 18-yard box.

73' - GOAL FOR SOUTHS - Thompson receives a through ball from Georgia Keen and places it into the top right-hand corner.

82' - GOAL FOR OLYMPIC - Leah Miles receives a penalty after being shoved in the back by Tayler Stevens and steps up to coolly convert past a diving Chloe Cole.

83' - GOAL FOR SOUTHS - Thompson replicates her earlier goal as she speeds past the backline down the left flank, cutting into the penalty area and crossing to Ella Goodman, who executes a calculated strike.
