Mighty Sports picks up first win; MOB triumphs

MANILA, Philippines -- Defending champion Mighty Sports picked up its first victory after three tries as it turned back Globalport, 100-89, Saturday in the 2013 Danny Espiritu Cup Basketball tournament at the EAC gym.

Lanky forward Mclean Sabellina, the squad's latest addition, exploded for 31 points and added 13 rebounds, two assists, and three steals to power Mighty Sports' attack from start to finish.

The last time Mighty trailed Globalport was at the three and half minute mark in the opening quarter, 11-12, but Edrick Ferrer scored a triple in the ensuing possession and they never looked back from there.

Nino Marquez added 17 points for Mighty Sports, which finally sustained a strong start then led by as many as 14, while Ferrer had 14 points and Jeff Manuel 13.

Erwin Sta. Maria unleashed a tournament-high 42 points for Globalport, but the Batang Pier remained winless after five matches.

MOB Alliance, meanwhile, joined Skyforce at the top spot with a 4-0 card after a 84-59 dismantling of Expert Global Solutions (EGS).

A 21-0 blast in the third quarter, which turned a four-point lead to a commanding 62-37 edge, by MOB Alliance stifled the usually-pesky EGS for good.

Richie Melencio carried MOB Alliance with his 15-point, eight-rebound performance while Eric Sugitan provided solid back up with 10 points and 11 boards.

EGS, whose only victory came from forfeiture, dropped to 1-3.
