Racal Motors nets 4th win in 2014 Danny Espiritu Cup

MANILA, Philippines -- Racal Motors assumed the top spot in the 2014 Danny Espiritu Cup Basketball tournament after last week's matches at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong.

Racal Motors repulsed Nougat, 84-64, last July 6 to wrap up the brief elimination round of the tournament organized by One Unite Sports with a 4-1 record.

The usual culprits did bulk of the damage for Racal Motors as Jayson Ibay and Marte Gil chipped in 17 points apiece while Jan Acebron and Allan Clemente had 16 and 15, respectively.

Skyforce, meanwhile, slipped past Nougat, 86-81, last July 4 to remain the only undefeated squad thus far in the six-team race.

The last season's finalists leaned on former pro Chester Tolomia, who had 18 points on 4-of-8 three-point shooting, for their third win in as many outings.

Skyforce fell to MOB in a thrilling double overtime finals match last year for a second straight runner up finish.

Nougat, which is bannered by Rene Boy Banzali and former PBA player Arnold Gamboa, in contrast reeled to its third straight defeat.

Gerry's Grill, meanwhile, kept its hold of the second place with a 3-1 card after demolishing Machine Lab Tigers, 100-65, in the other July 4 match.

Jeff Manuel, King Importante, and Paolo Orbeta combined for 47 points while the rest of the squad contributed at least two points for Gerry's Grill.

After three winless starts, Machine Lab Tigers have officially withdrawn from the competition due to lack of support, according to its manager Carlos Amador Fenequito and team sponsor Bryann Calantoc.

They also have not settled the joining fee according to the organizer One Unite Sports.
