Preview:

White City host Salisbury United in what will be an enthralling contest of Round 2 of the Westfield FFA Cup at Frank Mitchell Park. Don’t be fooled by their respective league campaigns as both of these sides can put on a show when at their best.

White City’s Chad Bugeja spoke about what the Cup means to his side in a taxing year to date.

“Confidence is not high at the moment through the group which you can identify through our position on the ladder so it’s a good opportunity to do something in the season by wining the Cup.”

Bugeja also knows his side have to overcome their problem of becoming complacent.

“I tell you one thing now, that’s one of our biggest problem when we play teams that some of us believe are lower than what we are, minds start to wonder and they think the game is won before it’s even started.”

“As far we’re concerned, we need a good kick in the backside and a wake up call, that’s for sure.”

Another pressing issue for City is a lean stretch of goals, having only scored 1 in their last 4 league outings.

“That’s probably a big one for us, we’re not scoring goals and you don’t win games if you don’t score goals.”

Bugeja talked about what was needed to end this unwanted stretch of low scoring.

“It needs to be a team effort to get the goals, it has got to start from the back and come all the way through. You can’t expect one or two players to do the job.”

“It’s not a case of we’re not getting chances either, it’s about taking those chances and putting them in the back of the net when we get them.”

City’s opponent Salisbury United had recently turned their fortunes around in their respective league and Senior Coach Carmine Lauriello talked about the importance of such a result.

“Winning on the weekend has definitely given the boys confidence after three losses but mind you, I thought we were competitive in all three of them.”

Lauriello also rates his chances, given the context of both team’s form.

“I rate our chances good because White City haven’t been travelling all that well at the moment but I think we’ll be competitive.”

The Westfield FFA Cup is also an opportunity for teams of lower ranked leagues to shine and show their true colours, something Lauriello hopes to do.

“Depending on the conditions, we try to build up and play from the back but that’s not always the case. Sometimes, weather permitting you can’t do that but generally we like to build and get the ball forward as quickly as possible.”

With a strong squad and some individual brilliance, Lauriello is confident his side will be in it to win it.

“If he’s got his shooting boots on, we got a guy called Armstrong Gaye, he’s pretty good and knows where the goals are.”

“We’re going to certainly try to field our first team I’m sure we’ll be competitive and see how we go and if not it’ll be a good experience for the boys.”
