In the first event of its kind, The Australian National University will host The University of Melbourne in an Inter-Varsity AFL game today, Thursday 2nd April. The fixture will be played at South Oval, with kick-off set for 3pm.
On face value it seems like a lopsided affair, but the local ANU team is littered with former development squad players, NEAFL listed players and is ably led by former Carlton player and Eastlake NEAFL coach Anthony Bourke. Bourke jumped at the chance to coach the local ANU team, recognising the opportunity to establish a competitive rivalry in Australian University Sport.
“It is great that I can be involved in the Inter-Varsity concept it its inaugural year” said Bourke.
The advent of the Inter-Varsity game has also been endorsed by NSW/ACT AFL Manager, Steven Mahar, realising the benefits to developing AFL in the region and at ANU.
For a team that has come together no more than a month ago, the intensity and skills displayed at training all point to an outfit well and truly ready for victory. ANU Sport as well look determined to put on a good day at the footy with pop up bars providing the traditional Thursday afternoon entertainment for spectators with pies to go with it all. At half time the college girls will be taking on the ANU AFL club women in an AFL 9s fixture as well. All in all it looks like it should be a great day, and frankly, a pretty good opportunity to clip the winged victory.
ANU Sport would like thank Melbourne University Sport, the ANU AFL Club, NSW/ACT AFL and the many volunteers who have helped drive this concept. We hope to get a big crowd down to the game and cheer the ANU team on to victory.
