Volunteer of the Month: February

Our first instalment of 'Volunteer of the Month' focuses on Stuart MacDougall. Stuart has been a player, referee and referee supervisor here Willetton and currently chairs our Domestic Competitions Committee. Through his tireless work and drive for continual improvement, the domestic competition has grown in both quality and numbers.

When and how did you get involved with Willetton Basketball?

I first became involved when I started playing domestically in Under 14s with a neighbour and friend.  I became a referee in Willetton's Junior competition in 2002. I got involved with the junior committee by assisting them with their competition database, and it all snowballed from there.  We all work together as part of one team, and my ultimate focus has been to create more efficient systems to try and reduce stress and pressure on our domestic club volunteers, particularly as we grow to accommodate the kids who have been on the waiting list for ages.

What your activities are and what do they involve (around Willetton)?

Over the years, playing, coaching, refereeing and supervising basketball. However, more recently my main involvement is volunteering as chairperson of the DCC.

What motivates you to stay involved?

The staff and volunteers at our Club; they are great at giving you energy that makes you want to stay involved at the Club. Also, the first day of a new season is great to see the fun the kids have at their first game.

In your opinion, what is the most important work that WBA does?

Providing opportunities for thousands of people to enjoy playing basketball, whether it be new players playing their first game or our veteran players.

Why do you volunteer?

It is satisfying and rewarding to work as part of a team that aims to help improve the sport that we all love.

Of what contribution or achievement are you most proud?

Leading the Association to play games across multiple stadia on Saturdays, allowing more children to start playing basketball.

What do you hope the organization will achieve in the near future? Long term?

I hope we are successful in expanding our stadium in the near future, but if that's not possible then I hope we achieve it longer term.

Do you have a message to share?

We are lucky to have hundreds of great volunteers at our basketball Club, but we are always looking for more. If you have some time to spare, speak with someone in your Club or the Association - I'm sure they'll be happy to have you on board and hopefully you'll find it really rewarding as well.

From everyone at Willetton Basketball Association, we acknowledge Stuart's continual contribution and efforts which go a long way in making our club successful. Stay tuned for the next month's instalment!

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
