UNDER 14S TAKE SHIELD

From Community newspaper Reporter.

THE Willetton Tigers last week showed their class by taking out the U14 Boys Club Championship shield competition.

Held in Floreat, the Tigers got off to a shaky start with two close calls to kick off pool F, losing to Canberra Gunners 53-49 before beating Sydney Comets 69-62, rounding out third position in their pool with a 63-43 loss to the Central Districts Lions.

It was another close game to start their push for the shield, going down to the North Adelaide Rockets 62-61 before they blew their opponents Darwin Cyclones out of the water with a 95-20 win.

Their quarterfinal match against the Southern Districts Spartans saw them take the game in a nail-biting 54-47 win before downing the Tamworth Thunder 62-46 with a dominant display in the semi final.

It was another close call in the grand final, but the Tigers pulled out the big plays to down the Canberra Gunners 48-45 to be crowned shield champions.

Roosevelt Williams was one of the most damaging players in the competition, sinking 148 points at an average of 18.5 a game, finishing fifth in the competition for total points scored, average points and third for three point shots.

Perry Lakes, Joondalup and Cockburn also competed.
