Fiji to field strong teams: Puamau

Laisiasa Puamau is confident that they will select a strong national Under-20 men and women's team for the 2010 FIBA Oceania Youth tournament in New Caledonia.

The Fiji Amateur Basketball Association's development officer yesterday said that he is confident of having a strong team following the completion of the national U-22 championship.

“Definitely, I think we can name a good Under-20 side. After this tournament we now have a large base of players to select from for next year,” he said. Top Pacific countries will be part of the 2010 FIBA Oceania Youth tournament in New Caledonia.

He said their specialised coaches were ready to spread the gospel of basketball to the young players.

“At the three-day tournament it was encouraging to see teams playing. “There are a lot of coaches who are teaching these players different set pieces and tactics to adapt,” Puamau continued on.

On the other hand, Jese Sikivou the 2008 national U-20 men's skipper led Freshman team to a win over Mighty of Raiwaqa 37-33 in the final.

In the women's final Golden Bati lead by national U-20 rep Britney Hazelman defeated X- Wounds 44-40.

The recent Twisties national secondary school's basketball championship saw the birth of the X- Wounds side. Puamau said the national club championship would be held on December 12 in Lautoka.
