Basketball Fiji postpone championship

The inaugural National Basketball Championship scheduled to be held this week has been postponed. Basketball Fiji Development Officer Laisiasa Puamau said the three-day event has been moved to next week. The championship starts on Thursday at the Eds Court in Raiwaqa. The tournament, he says, was postponed to allow teams more time to pay in their registration. "Furthermore, there has been a lot of confusion between teams in Suva and organisers on the date and venue of the tournament," said Puamau. "Therefore we have decided to push back the tournament schedule by a week to allow the tournament organisers to tighten up and improve in these areas.” Teams from Nadi and Lautoka, Puamau says, have been informed of the decision to move the tournament. “I would like to personally apologise for any inconvenience caused however I’m hopeful that teams from Lautoka and Nadi will attend as they are known to lift the level of competition.” Meanwhile, six of 16 men’s teams that have verbally confirmed their participation have paid in their registration fees. “However, only 12 men’s teams will be accommodated for the tournament so we will give first priority to the first six men’s teams that pay in theirs. In the women’s grade we have seven teams confirmed.” The tournament, Puamau says, have been organised in partnership with the Raiwaqa Basketball Players Association to officially open the 2010 basketball season.
