Saints, Wed C top basketball

Saints and Wed C took out top honours on Saturday after they defeated Boston and Golden Bati respectively in the finals of the Ram Sami National Basketball Championships. Former national rep and Basketball Fiji development officer, Laisiasa Puamau said Saints won 60-39.  Wed C with the services of some national reps like Makerata Mani, Agnes Sokosoko, Loma Mataika and Mere Naisoro defeated tournament favourites, Golden Bati in a closely tussled final of 23-21. “The competition was a very tough one enjoyed by all the teams,” Puamau said. He said the toast of the tournament was seeing that national coaches have gone into coaching club teams for the tournament. “It is so good to see national coaches involving with clubs, Paul Whippy was coaching the Saints and Michael Whippy coached Shaq Attack.” He added many teams prepared well for the tournament and this was seen when minor teams were starting to become a threat in the giant teams of Basketball Fiji. “Minor teams are slowly gauging the gap, and they were very competitive.” Puamau said looking at these teams beating big teams like Shaq Attack losing to a Western based side and Knights losing to Idaman, was a positive sign for development. “It is good for development to see these teams topple traditional giants.” Meanwhile having some national reps back playing club competitions also provided good competition for young aspiring players. Puamau said the Golden Bati side which was formed after the secondary school competition really pushed the Wed C national reps laced team.
