Wongs program reaps rewards

ASSISTANT Basketball Fiji development officer Nicholas Wong has been running a basketball development program for children in Raiwaqa for the past six weeks. His team, the Raiwaqa All-Stars beat the Veiuto students at the Easter Basketball Champions, 21-6. "They are well-versed with the basics of the game and I guess that is why they made it so far and were very good," said Wong. The team consists of mostly primary school students. Mariko Kunau is his youngest student and he is in Class One at Marist Primary School. Kunau's father is a member of the Raiwaqa Veterans, Nua Kunau. "They went up against very tall opponents but they were not intimidated at all. They stood their ground and played very well. "It just goes to show that height really does not matter in basketball but how you use your skills and talent. I am very proud of them," said Wong. "This shows that development is going great and I am working now on recruiting more students to join the clinic. "This will also act as a build-up for the Primary School competitions which is just around the corner." In the Suva-Laucala area, the National basketball captain and this year's Easter Champs captain too, Leonard Whippy also held a development clinic today at Ed's Court.
