Marist dominates basketball

Marist Brothers High School successfully defended the Under-19 boy’s title in the Twisties National Secondary Schools Basketball Championship at the Vodafone Arena. The Flagstaff boys defeated Latter Day Saints Secondary School 61-29.

But defending U19 girl’s champion Adi Cakobau School was dethroned by LDS 19-30.

ACS played without Milika Koyamainaivure who is with the national team in Noumea for the Pacific Games. Raiwaqa Youths won the U15 divisions after the boys defeated MBHS 27-24 and the girls outclassed St Josephs 23-7.

Marist defeated newcomer Nadi International 34-31 in the U17 boy’s division while Yat Sen Secondary defeated St Joseph 18-14 in the girl’s division.

Fiji Basketball development officer Laisiasa Puamau said the 2011 tournament was a success.

We have noticed some new champions and this clearly showed development in schools.

“We were really impressed with the performance of all the 17 schools.

“The competition was quite intense from all participating schools and we just want to acknowledge all teachers and students for preparing their teams really well,” Puamau said.

“There has been a major improvement in the games this year because of the development process undertaken around Fiji. Schools from the West have really improved giving good competition too.”
