Champs start title defence

DEFENDING men's champions Macfarlane started their Raiwaqa Basketball Inter-lane title campaign on a winning note yesterday.

Macfarlane beat Grantham Pirates 43-30 in the opening round of the Connect-sponsored tournament at Eds court. Avon Place edged Spowart 35-34 in one of the exciting matches while Crossroads defeated Police 36-29.

In the women's division, Crossroads beat Ming Ting 40-18.

Raiwaqa Basketball Association official Peniasi Kainamoli said they were pleased with the outcome.

"We are happy that we have officially started this inter-lane competition," he said. The competition will run for the next six weeks before the elimination stages.

Kainamoli said supporters turned out in numbers to watch their teams.

"We had a lot of supporters. It is good that we have started the competition already and we hope for more supporters in the coming weeks."

Kainamoli also thanked the sponsors (Connect Fiji) for supporting the tournament.
