Basketball Fiji’s Development Program Comes to Life

The first round of the Post Fiji Kaji Basketball competition was completed Friday 13th of March. Five schools around the Suva area participated in the historical event. The atmosphere at the three venues- Under 10’s and 14’s at International High School Hall and the Under 12’s at Raiwai Youth Hall was electrifying. In the under 14 grade host school International primary used the crowd to come from behind and defeat a fired up Holy Trinity outfit. The final scores were International school 14 Holy Trinity 8. In the second game International school was not able to repeat there heroic first game win against a taller and bigger team from Latter Days Saints Primary School. The final score LDSPS 14 International Primary School 6.

In the under 12 grade LDSPS narrowly beat Holy Trinity Primary School in a nail biting encounter 2 points to nil. The second was a very exciting match up between Veiuto and John Wesley. Veiuto Primary school came away with the win 12 points to 8.

In the under 10’s grade a skillful John Wesley outfit with a majority of its players living in the Raiwaqa area were able to use their skills to there advantage to beat Vieuto10- 0. The second game saw I.S.S.P.S beat LDSPS 10-6.

Nonetheless the end result, each student thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  Just the thought of each individual representing their schools made these young kids winners. It was very encouraging witnessing young baller’s come to life on the basketball court. Basketball development will continue with the various schools this week.

Unfortunately, round 2 was postponed due to a Tsunami warning that occurred early in the morning of the day of competition. Fortunately for all concerned it was a false alarm.

Round 2 will take place this week at International School and Raiwai Hall from 1:00-2:30 on Friday 27th March.
