Kaji basketball ends on a high

The final of the Post Fiji Kaji Primary Schools Basketball competition ended on a high note at Eds Court in Raiwaqa yesterday.

In the U14 finals, Latter Day Saints edged Veiuto Primary school 16-14 to be crowned winners while International Primary School defeated Holy Trinity Anglican School 14-6 to finish at third place. In the U12 finals John Wesley Primary beat Veiuto 10- 4 while the U10 final was called off due to unfavorable weather.

National Basketball Development Officer Laisiasa Puamau was thrilled with the level of competition displayed by the primary school players and believed players would be at a different level in future.

Puamau said basketball has been revived in the country with the development from the grass root level. It is great to see Basketball Fiji come to life every Friday. We wanted to have more competitions played but I believe we all try to improve on that in the future.

He said the sport had also derived the best character from the students.  It is very exciting to witness that through basketball each participant is able to be filled with joy and happiness. Basketball could be used as a tool to build character, build team work and install discipline in an individual life, Puamau said.

Holy Trinity had been the only school without any court but has done wonders in the competition. The competition has really grown from week 1 with many schools improving.

The most improved team would be Holy Trinity Primary School where the kids have been training without a basketball court. The competition was set up to develop and get kids playing basketball but has become very competitive, he said. The performance of the young players has been really outstanding. With a development program in place many of the primary schools are beginning to grasp the basics at a very young age, Puamau added
