With the recent celebration of the AFL’s Indigenous Round, AFL Northern Rivers Juniors took part in Australia wide acknowledgment of Indigenous Australians contribution to the national game.
The League is proud to announce the sponsorship of over 10 new Indigenous players whom coincidently timed their AFL debut to correspond with the Indigenous Round two weeks ago.
These players are proud recipients of a 2013 Scholarship through the AFL Indigenous and Disadvantaged Scholarship Program, a new initiative implemented through the AFL Northern Rivers Junior League in season 2013. The program has been funded through the NSW State Government – Office of Communities, Sport and Recreation and has been extremely successful in its first year. So far the league has approved over 20 scholarship applications with many more expected.
“Its fantastic to see we’ve had such a great response to the Indigenous Scholarship opportunity the League has offered this season” said AFL Northern Rivers Juniors President Bob Lodge.
“AFL Northern Rivers Juniors is making every effort to better engage with Indigenous communities in the Northern Rivers to ensure the junior competition better reflects the community in which we live.”
With the majority of Indigenous recipients being from Casino, Casino JAFC Vice President David Heath said “Indigenous players bring a charismatic atmosphere to our Club whilst adding to the exciting future of AFL on the Northern Rivers.”
The newly recruited Casino players thoroughly enjoyed their first game experience and are excited at the prospects of the remaining 2013 season and beyond.
