Monday - round 4

After four rounds of play there are two undefeated teams: Auckland and North Harbour, which is an outright final. There was some doubt this would be the case as Auckland played Counties Manukau today and had lost to them at the North Island Champs in June, but it was a different story today with Auckland comfortably winning 8-3.

North Harbour defeated Canterbury 9-2 to book their place in the final.  Brock Matheson (NH) ended the good run of results being posted by Asher Richardson in the singles, defeating him in three games.  The match of the tie was the boys doubles with the Canterbury pairing of Richardson and William Chen defeating Matheson and Evan Lee 24-22 in the third game.  Canterbury's other win came in the third mixed doubles: William Chen and Amy Rose Pfeifer defeating Evan Lee and Amanda Brown.

Manwatu posted their first win of the event defeating Otago 8-3.

Harbour go into the final with the favourite tag, after 44 matches they have only dropped 7 compared to Auckland who have lost 13 to date.

Results:

North Harbour def Canterbury 9-2

Manawatu def Otago 8-3

Sunday - round 3

North Harbour and Auckland continued their winning ways in the third session of the inter-association finals.  North Harbour comfortably defeated Manawatu 9-2 while Auckland had to work harder but eventually defeated Canterbury 7-4.

Asher Richardson, the top local player who is only 16 is more than holding his own in the older age group, is still undefeated in singles, tonight taking the scalp of World Junior Championships team mate Dhanny Oud from Auckland with Richardson using both his height and fitness to his benefit to win the match in three games.

Josh Curry continued to make his mark on the tournament after his win against Dhanny Oud yesterday, today he took Brock Matheson to the wire with Brock winning the match 25-23 in the third.

Monday morning sees Auckland playing Counties Manukau with Auckland looking to reverse the result from the North Island Championships in June when they went down to Counties Manukau.

Results:

North Harbour defeated Manawatu 9-2

Auckland defeated Canterbury 7-4

Counties Manukau defeated Otago 10-1

Sunday - round 2

Results went as predicted in the second session of play, however within each time there were some results of note.  Otago's Luke White defeated Auckland's Riga Oud in two games to win the only match in the tie for Otago

Out of the 11 matches, 7 went to three games in the North Harbour - Counties Manukau tie with Harbour winning 5 of them.  The match of the day was between Brock Matheson (NH) and Praveen Tayalan with Praveen eventually taking the honours 22-20 in the third game.

Asher Richardson continued his winning ways at top singles for Canterbury defeating Manawatu's Josh Curry very comfortably.

After two rounds North Harbour and Auckland remain as the only unbeaten teams.

Results:

North Harbour def Counties Manukau 8-3

Canterbury def Manawatu 7-4

Auckland def Otago 10-1

Saturday - round 1
The first round of play in the inter-association finals saw two very close ties with nearly two upsets.

The biggest surprise was the Auckland - Manawatu tie, Auckland, seeded second, Manawatu seeded 6th.  At one stage Manawatu led the tie 5-2 and looked on track for a major upset but it was a case of lost opportunities with Auckland digging deep to win the tie 6-5.

Manawatu's top mens singles player Josh Curry was the real surprise package, defeating New Zealand Junior Representative Dhanny Oud in two games.  With the matches tied at 5 all it all came down to the last match on court which was the no. 2 mixed doubles.  Adding to the tension, the match went to three games Manawatu winning the first game 21-19, Auckland the second 21-19, Manawatu leading 20-16 in the third but could not get that vital last point to win the match and tie, Auckland coming back to win the game 23-21 and giving them the tie 6-5.

In the Counties Manukau - Canterbury match the end result also hinged on the last match of the tie.  Earlier in the tie the local favourite Asher Richardson scored a good two game win over Praveen Tayalan 21-19 2-14 to keep Canterbury's hopes of an upset win alive.  The tie result all hinged on the mixed doubles, Canterbury dependant upon Richardson winning his match at no. 2 but it was not to be as high Delmonte and Mikalyla Moore hoeld on to win the match 22-10 in the third game to level the scores at 5 all.  It was always going to be difficult for Canterbury to win the top mixed doubles against Praveen Tayalan and Michelle Chan who proved to be too strong for William Chen and Rebecca Jury winning the match in two games and the tie for Counties Manukau 6-5

North Harbour made short work of Otago, winning all their games in straight games to take the tie 11-0.  It was good to see Jessica Jonggowisastro return to the court after several months away from tournament play due to study committments at Otago University.
